Comparing these two. I realize one is a big compact (green)and one is a small utility (orange). Which one do you think is superior? I will add a slightly bigger loader to the orange one as is on the green one for ~$6,000 so they'll be similarly equipped. I can get the green for 30K, the orange will be ~$500 less. I'm also looking at new ones since financing is offered for 42 mos at 0% on both.

The orange one says it's sold. The green one looks like an amazing machine. Even without seeing the orange one, if the green has a great loader and you need a larger than OEM loader to make the orange match it, I'd vote green. But given I have no experience with tractors this size, my vote is only worth what you paid for it ;).

I'm curious, will they deliver it to you for that price?

Tough call. Buyers choice I'd say. I demo-ed a 4730 a year and a half ago. It was a sweet little tractor. I can't say anything bad about a Kabota either. No substitute for raw HP when you need it, IF you need it.

Flip a coin!?!?!?

An M5040 is way more tractor. Your comparing a utility to a compact, not exactly a fair fight.

PTO HP should be nearly the same, the LA1153 loader will have a big advantage over a 400x for sure..

The Deere is actually 8 more HP. It's a 58HP diesel stuffed in a compact. the M5040 is 50 HP but in a larger framed tractor. I don't like the tiny tires on the Deere, but I love the cab. I'm getting a price on a new 5040, just like the one in the picture.

I'm on the border of a compact or a small 'ute.

I imagine this will not be a popular thing to say, but having currently owned a JD 4600, and a Kubota M7040 I would strongly recommend the the Orange tractor. Unless they have totally redone those 4000 series tractors they are a pretty light and cheap little rig in my opinion, and the loader that is on mine is pure and simple junk(460). I keep my 4600 at my business and use it for light industrial use, such as blading snow, moving light objects with the loader(1/2 ton or less), and running a Land Pride 84" finish mower. It has not been abused by any means and with 1200 hours on the clock and five trips to the green dealer, it is falling apart. The orange tractor stays at home and does most all of the farm work. I realize we are doing an apples to oranges comparison, but there is no doubt to me the M series Kubota is gonna hold up better than the 4000 series Deere for serious commercial work.

I would take the larger engine M5040 over the JD4720. Too bad the M5040 isn't a hst.

Actually, the 4720 has the bigger engine with 8 more HP and a turbocharger! (58HP). The M5040 is 50HP, 4 cylinder non turbo. I think some is lost to the rear wheels through the hydro tranny, though.

When I was mentioning a larger engine, I should have clarified: more cubic inches. M5040: 186 and the 4720: 148.9.

Personally I would say the Kubota was more tractor. Hp ain't everything.;) That said I guess a lot would depend on what you are wanting to use it for. The JD should be more manuverable and easier to haul, but he extra weight and size of the Kubota could have real advantages when working it also.

The Kubota's more tractor for sure. As said above, horsepower isn't everything, there's a lot more that goes into making a tractor than horsepower. Look at all the specs, the kubota is a utility tractor made to work, a real tractor. The 4720 is more of a toy designed for the weekend 2 acre ranchette owner. I'll get a lot of howls from guys on here for saying that because most here are compact tractor owners but it's true. The kubota is going to be a much more capable machine.

Well, it's a bit much tractor for two acres. In fact I think any reasonable person would consider it capable of some light industrial use by say . . . a contractor or business owner.

That said, CumminsLuke and you both present the argument that this isn't an apples to apples comparison. However, there's no need to be derogatory by calling the smaller JD a toy. That'll just subtract from your premise, giving it say CUT weight, and not Utility Tractor weight ;)

I would take the American "toy" over the "tractor" from the far east. When it comes to getting PTO work done, HP trumps cu in.

You might want to check a little closer pard, if the newer 4000 series Deere's are like the 4000 series Deere I have, then they too come from the same place as my Kubota M7040.

Sorry about it pal, but beginning in 2005, JD started producing the 4000-20 series in Georgia, USA and they are powered by the American, JD Powertech engine, Not the eastern Yanmar which may drive your machine. A word of advice to y'all, think and verify facts first, type second for hearsay is best left unsaid.

I've been around a lot of "real" tractors and I've never seen the brake petals on the left on them!

Sure does screw with the real farmers heads when they see them on a few of the compacts that are built.

Most when told of the advantages of brake steer just laugh as they have already bought front end parts for there four wheel drive tractors.

JD is 50 PTO HP
Kubota is 45 PTO HP.

Both have enough PTO HP for what I need.

The 4720 weighs 4300lbs
The 5040 weighs 4550lbs

The 4720 3pt lifts 2500 at 24"
The 5040 3pt lifts 3300 at 24"

Both have about 17GPM of total pump capacity.
