JD 790
Well I just got my 790 about 10 days ago but I am over 30 hours, so I am starting to think about my 50 hr maintenance.

I use Delo 400 in my Ford PSD but I am leaning towards using synthetic in my tractor. Why use it in the tractor and not the truck? Because I am noit going to be extending the change intervals so I'd go broke changing 15 quarts of synthetic in my PSD every change! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Also the PSD does not get the 'extreme" use regularly that tractors do.

So with that said what synthetic should I get. I need something that is readily available and I live in the Northeast so it will be operating in temperatures anywhere from -0+*-100*F.

Any advice on the other fluids or filters. Do I need to go to JD or will NAPA have crossover filters?

Oh my, another oil question /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I like Delvac 1300 or Delvac 1 from Mobil. No real reason, just what I've used in the trucks. Walmart sells it. Right now I'm debating wether to go synthetic on my stuff. I have a new tractor and diesel truck. Hmmm ?

I haven't decieded yet. I buy the 1300 for just under $7 per gallon. Don't know what the Delvac 1 is running now. Then there is always Shell synthetic which is priced low most of the time. I'll probably leave the truck on dino like you.... mine takes 11 quarts, I will change every 4k or less. I want it to last and last and last /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The tractor takes much less oil over the year, so it couldn't hurt to have the extra protection. I'll use Delvac, always liked Mobil products. Were they the first to do synthetic with the Mobil 1?

Oh my, another oil question

Not looking for another debate just experience ore recommendations with synthetics and tractors. Walmart near me seems to only have Rotella Synthetic, I will double check on the others.

I just want something good and readily available. That is why I used the Delo 400 on my truck, yuo can get it anywhere. Just figured with the tractor only taking 4.3 quarts why not spend the extra $$$ and go for the synthetic.

As far as the filters I guess I'll go to the dealer unless there is aridiculous price diff. between them and NAPA/other equivalents. I know the dipstick on the gear oil says HyGuard low vis, not sure if there is an equivalent or anything better for that.

My belief is that synthetics excel in two areas. Extreme cold and extended change intervals ( with oil analysis ). If you have either of these situations synthetics are for you.

The best full synthetics are going to be Delvac 1, Amsoil, Redline and John Deere 0w-40.

Yea I said JD 0w-40 it has an heavy duty detergent package, antiwear package that include antimony, zinc and moly and a good antifoam package.

The problem is the cost $28.00/gallon, $26/gallon, $36.00/gallon and $22.00/gallon respectively.

A well formulated dino ( like Chevron Delo , Pennzoil Long Life or Conoco Hydroclear) or synthetic blend like Schaeffer's will do you a great job unless you want to push the oil change intervals or will be operating in extreme cold conditions.

Check out http://www.bobistheoilguy.com for all you wanted to know about oil.

I use genuine JD filters on my 790. After cutting as few brands of filters apart the John Deere Fleetguard built filters seemed top shelf. And at $6.00 local a better deal than WIX or Baldwin.

Thanks, so JD synthetic is actually the best price?

I always use good filters, not looking to save money just get the best. I guess thta means JD for this application. On my truck I use Motorcraft or Mobil 1 filters as they had the best ratings.

Oil filter costs: They can vary!

Dealer = $21.00
Cummins = $8.75

You can probibly get the Shell 5w-40 synthetic for $18.00/gallon. But if you compare the additive package, flash point, pour point and cold cranking figures the JD 0w-40 beats the heck out of Shell 5w-40.

By the way Chevron International makes JD oils currently. The Material Safety Data Sheet MSDS for the 0w-40 is a Chevron document.

JD now sells Fleetguard build filters for your PSD.

Uh, actually it has been on sale at Wally World more than once for 12.85 per gallon. I have never seen the Mobil Delvac 1 on sale but it is rarely seen anyway though I would prefer it. Good luck. J

Arguably the finest and most costly oil is Redline At about $8.00 a quart, it's up there. Go check out their website to find out why going even with a 5W oil may not be in your best interest. Rat...

Why has no one mentioned Castrol Syntek synthetic oil in these synthetic posts? I have used it for years and found it to be good oil.
