Which tractor for 40 acre homestead

How level is your property? If you have any hills, think about at least 50 hp and maybe 4wd. The last thing you want is a light modern tractor that doesn't have quite enough oomph for the job, especially trying to mow tall grass or pull a trailer load of firewood in on slick ground. New tractors are nice if you have the money to spend but IMO you cannot go wrong with an older John Deere that has been reasonably well-maintained.

It drops 100' over 2000' but 40% of the drop is concentrated at the creek. Have not moved there, but when I walked it, it seemed mostly flat. I plan on 4WD. Maybe as much as 50 hp.

I have 37 hp, 32 at the pto, and I can pull a running 6' brush hog up a 22-25 degree (not percent) slope in HST Low with the front axle engaged and don't have to use the diff lock if the ground is hard. If your ground is relatively flat, I don't think you'd have any trouble, unless you're pulling a very large wagon full of cut trees.

I think you're biggest challenge, from what you describe, will be tree stump removal.

Do you maybe have a friendly neighbor with an industrial grade TLB you could borrow for digging stumps? I know you don't live there yet.

If you are posturing sheep the underbrush will soon disappear.

50pto hp would be good and weight for pushing things
