Calhoun, I didn't realize you had already ordered your tractor and I'm sure it will be great for you. I just wanted to make sure BlakeEatmon was sure that 12x12 transmission fit his needs also.

After I win the $568 million tonight I'm buying a big John Deere with all the options. Heck, I might get a few! Don't anybody go out and waste their money on buying a Mega-Million ticket, I already bought the winner!

I totally understand what your saying. This is why I came to this site in the first place. Lots of great info, I swear picking a tractor was as hard as finding a wife(normal wife). Good luck, I hope you win. If you buy a couple, you should have a couple extra hats, Ill take one!

The tank wasn't melting because of exhaust heat, what seems to be happening is a hydraulic valve or the rock shaft bypasses fluid until the transmission and hydraulic oil gets so hot that the fuel tank melts.
I can think of 2 or 3 guys that this has happened to...and it seems to have happened to them multiple times. Definitely not happening in any kind of widespread numbers, but something is going on.

This must be on open station tractors. I just looked a 5065E open station, 2 wheel drive, and the fuel tank is behind the seat above the rock shaft. I would guess there are multiple hydraulic lines in this vicinity that may be the cause. If this is the problem, buying a tractor with a cab should elliminate this concern. Hopefully for everyones safety that this is addressed at the engineering level at JD and the problem corrected on all new and in service units.

I bought a 2013 5093e and it is a very nice tractor.

What is an Ls?

What do you plan on doing on the additional 100 acres?

Dealer in Indiana here. The cab robs a lot of hp

How does the cab rob horsepower? I would like to move up to the 5085 for the heavier duty loader but I think the price is starting to get a little high for what I would like to spend. I've heard the power reverser robs about 15 hp. This makes me rethink the 5055E. Is this true from your experience?

Thanks

It's not the cab, but the air conditioning that cools the cab. I believe 3-5 HP. Not sure about the power reverser, maybe 8-10 HP. :confused3:

Wasn't thinking about the air conditioning since its only 10 degrees today and going below zero tonight. LOL That makes sense though. I know it a big drain on horsepower in a car or truck. Thanks.

Here in Loony Land it's 67 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Same ole same ole, day after day after day after day after day.

I have a 2011 5045E open station. The fuel tank sits behind the operators seat on top of the rear end the full width fender to fender. It is made out of plastic so it is not going to stand a lot of heat. I've read most of the posts about the melting fuel tanks, all I could find at least. They seem to be an isolated fault in a hydraulic valve that keeps a pump working all the time until it boils the hydraulic oil which is hot enough to melt the plastic tank where it touches the rear casting. I haven't heard of more then two instances so perhaps it is just a couple of machines out of the 50,000 they made that year. (I certainly hope so) . The jury is still out and I check the rear housing often while using the PTO to monitor the heat output. No problem so far.
I don't know if adding a cab would change anything that matters on this problem or not. If it's an internal valve problem sticking a cab on top might make it worse not better.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that the fuel tank on a cab version is under the cab, behind the steps so that should solve the melting problem. You are the first to describe in detail where and when the melting issue arises. Thanks

namyessam

Was just reading in another thread about this issue and it sounds like, although the melting issues will be elliminated by the position of the fueltank with a cab, it doesn't solve the real problem of the overheating hydraulic system and the lack of concern by John Deere.

This robbing horsepower stuff I believe is overrated. I have turned the AC on and off (compressor switch) while running and I can't feel much difference at all.
