Only we the consumers can stop/slow the import flood by not buying it. Painful but in a while American built stuff will come back.

Did you know even ERTYL toys are Chinese now? So much for Des Moines!!!

Since the Ertl family sold the company in the late '70s or early '80s it has changed hands about 4 times. The toy factory in Dyersville, IA was moved to Mexico as a result of NAFTA in the '90s.

Regardless of where they come from now, your point is well taken.

I agree with you guys. I have some old Ertyls that, I think, the big ones were made in the US and the little ones were made in China. Don't know what it's like now, though. The foreign tractors aren't bad, but I don't like the fact that much that the "American" ones are practially made overseas. From what I understand, they are just assembled in the US. I like all tractors, but that fact still remains.

So, how do we change it, if we have NO American choices?

Dyersville. That's right. My bad. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

New Holland TC30 is made in Japan. I think the engines for ALL the compacts are Japanese (Shibaura).
John Deere is from Everywhere. New 5003 series is built in India. 790 and 990 are all Japan. Other compact JD's use Yanmar (Japanese) engines.
LongAgribusiness Landtrac 300 and 360 have Mitsubishi engines.
Mahindra is an Indian company. However, some of their new compacts are Korean made.
Kubota...? I think it's pure bred Japanese.
I don't think there is a 100% American made diesel compact tractor.

Got a headache yet?

This issue gets debated a lot. It comes down to the fact that RC Ertl can make a lot more money, sell their products for less and have a quality product at the same time by going to China. If they would have kept producing them in the US, they would have had to charge more money and you would not get as detailed a product because the cost to produce them would be to great. It is the same with a lot of other things. Heck, even NZG and Conrad, two of the largest diecast construction companies have started building models in China because they can get as good a quality that they get in Germany but for less money. Which puts more money in their pocket and allows them to add more detail to their models making collectors want to buy more. Which puts more money into their pockets. It all comes down to money.

However, Scale Models still makes some (if not all) of their models in Dyersville. Scale Models is a Joseph Ertl, III company.
