Which type socket holder works best in a tool chest?

Got a new tool chest and wonder which socket organizer works? There's the magnet type and also the peg type and I'm not sure which is best.

Which type do you have?

I use the cheap type that Harbor Freight used to sell for < $1 and are now $1.50. Bought them by the handful when HF was trying to "upscale". Fit in all my toolboxes.

I second this. One good thing about the peg type is there is no fighting to get the socket off the rail and the size numbers are easy to read.

Less expensive and work good enough.

Pegs here, though I did have one peg break off for no good reason. Probably a molding defect. A little CA glue fixed that right up.

I like the "fighting to get the socket off the rail". It keeps them on the rail and not lost. I often work a ways from my toolboxes. I'll grab a ratchet and the appropriate sized stick.

I like the HF magnetic tool holder strips the best. They used to be a giveaway item,
but are still inexpensive enough to be of value to me, especially when on sale. I simply organize strips in tool chest drawers by SAE/Metric & Driver size and align the sockets in size order - (sometimes I have 2 or 3 (10mm, etc) same size adjacent on the strip as they originally were bought in sets....over the last 50+ years!! BTW, I similarly use the mag strips to organize my hand (open/box/combo) wrenches. Happy New Year, Everyone!!!

In a stationary box I prefer zero force removal. So peg or cut out foam. Makes it much easier to grab another socket when you're halfway through a job with dirty or slippery hands and need another one. Current work box has all the sockets in the top tray in foam and it's bloody brilliant!

I have some kits in clamshell boxes that I used in my mobile tool bag in a past life. It wasn't ideal. They got kicked and dropped into a massive mess semi regularly, but it was neat and easy to find which worked especially well for that career. The mobile toolkit in my ute has this and it works brilliantly. Separate kits in clamshell containers that all store in a rack.

I have a few sets on clip on rails that are held reasonably securely. It works fine for stuff I use infrequently in my work box (long series chrome sockets mostly), but they do come off in rough treatment. More annoyingly they are unprotected steel so rattle loudly and damage the finish on the sockets and anything they rub against. And in tropical Australia stopping corrosion is a battle, and anything you put on the tools to stop that ends up on *everything* in the bag.

In the service truck the magnet holders work best for me.

In the shop I took a different approach with Craftsman sockets bought about 40 years ago in a molded case.

I used the bandsaw to trim the case to fit the drawers…

So far so good.

I use this style.

They release pretty easy unless the socket drawer is left open and collects dust and grit. I like how easy it is to customize my set up or rearrange to add new sockets.
