Roy,

I'm thinking you live north of Manchester, MD where the L4610 and the Deere 5300 are for sale. Aren't you in the York,PA area?

Good post. I agree for the most part, but I believe Kubota does make tractors up to 103 PTO hp also. And I am sure Kubota's larger tractors stack up very favorably against Deere's of similar PTO hp.

Art, 103HP is considered pretty small now that big iron goes up past 500HP.

100-500+ HP is a lot more range of tractor size than 20HP-100HP.

When there's a big job to be done, names like DEERE, CAT & CASE/IH reign supreme, not Kubota. Kubota can't even compete.

However, Deere can and does very well at competing in the 30-100 HP range. However, as much as it pains me to say, Kubota is superior to Deere in the 30-100HP range with a few exceptions, of course. I like that K has their own engines & drivelines made in-house. Their quality is undeniable. It is rare to see anyone get burned or get a lemon from K.

FWIW I'd vote for the L4610 HST, Low hours, setup with R4's, probably a bit easier to trailer round than the others as well. And its closer to you, seems like the better deal to me if you give up a few HP, and of course if you are comfortable with the HST option.

I've owned a Kubota before, have an old L175 that just wont die but its hardly a modern Kub by any means, and I have never sat my hiney in a Deere, not even in a dealer lot, nor have I checked out any of the newer Kubota models. They both always seemed to be priced at a premium to the other brands I was comparing them with, but with the choices you presented I would still stick with the L4610.

I'm just SE of York. Manchester is about an hour drive...maybe a bit more.

Manchester is just south of Hampstead on MD Route 30 (PA Route 94), I think. I've been through there more then once, but it's been a few years.

It's definately the most sensible purchase. If I knew how much more tractor the M was than the L, it'd be easier to know. They're within a few HP of each other. Something tells me the M is a much stronger & heavier piece.

You could go to the Kubota website and look at the specs. If the weight of the "M" series is considerably more then the "L"s, that would be a pretty good indicator.

So, where are you at, Builder?

Builder,
One thing that adds cost and probably weight to the M4900 is the final drive. M-series final drives are planetary. L-series, to my knowledge (??), all have spur gear final drives. Planetary has been the defacto standard for Ag tractors for some time; heavy, rugged, quiet and expensive. Spur gear drives are simple, inexpensive, compact and noisy. I've never seen a debate comparing their reliability or strength. Properly engineered, I suspect either design can comfortably take anything the tractor dishes out.

Would be good to hear from someone who knows.

Thanks, Bob. You're right about the rears being heavier. The M-4900 is a good 800-1,000 lbs heavier than the L4610 from what I'm reading.

Builder you know you want the M4900:D , so get that sucker. There's a large tree removal company right down the road, and that's all they use is M4900's, I think they have three and one MX5000. They are all well used and we're talking large amounts of hard wood and timber. I asked one of the forman at the gas station about a month ago, how do they hold up, he replied "they are the only one that will". For what it's worth...Clay
