Comparison which zero turn mower will cut knee high or taller , grass without leaving half uncut

I don't see how a single 4 or 5 foot blade out front is going to solve your problem, but there are numerous front mounted mowers out there from Toro, Deere and others which are sold by golf courses, etc....Even those will have multiple blades with each one no longer than 24".......

Imagine trying to mow with a deck out in front of you large enough to handle a single 4 or 5 ft blade. Seems like a potentially troublesome task.......The mower would be 5.5 ft deep (front to back)at a minimum.......

I don't have to imagine an out front deck, I have one, a 7 ft brush hog.

With all that has been said, much of which I agree with, come ztr"s are much better than others. You need one with plenty of power, a very large discharge chute and the ability to raise the deck higher. I can only speak to the brands that I have used. John Deere,Scag and Hustler and Gravley do pretty well. Snapper pro,X-Mark and Husqvarna are not as good.

A flail mower will do the job for you. I have an old Kubota F2100 front deck mower that had the option of a flail mower. Don't know how many tractors/mowers have that option but the flail mower will go through the tall grass and not make a mess of it.. They have front, rear and side mounted options for larger tractors. A rotary finish mower will never do the job for you as noted in the above posts.

My neighbor ruined a very nice Deere Z930 mowing a field...if the grass is that tall, you really want a field mower to get it under control first.

ZTRs and riding mowers are not designed to mow grass and weeds that are knee high or taller, especially in one cut while leaving no stragglers. They are designed to mow YARDS with grass that is a few inches high.

Some of us use them for mowing taller stuff, but they aren't designed for it. So your search for a ZTR that will do it will probably be a long and fruitless one.

If I was unwilling to mow it often enough to handle it with a ZTR, I'd use a flail mower on it.

The tip speed and cutting ability of the blade increases the longer the blade is. is all

Conversely though, the blade has more torque to overcome resistance when it's smaller. A long blade will bog down easier than a smaller one when driven by the same power.

TORO has one for their 3xx models. It has a 5 foot cut.


I used to use it on this 325D, before we moved here three years ago.


I guess I should try it here on the tall grass.

lots of sound advice & options here. going back to the OP question, if you check out the specs on each zero turn, they'll give the range of min to max depth of cut. i agree w/others that trying to cut tall growth in one pass is really not practical and not intended of zero turns. maybe the ft. mounted option is different. good luck

This would be my choice Kubota ZD 326 pro but as others have stated that's pretty tall grass to be mowing with a ZTR.I would say you would have to go over it twice.
