White pine top broken, why & how?????

Since the top of your white pine broke off and the needles are still green, it may have been caused by something like internal weakness or a small animal causing damage. Given your equipment, it’s important to avoid damaging the tree further. If you can’t get a chain around it, using a rope and sandbag may work to get it secured. Alternatively, contacting a professional tree service might be a safer way to handle the situation without risking injury. Waiting for it to fall naturally could be an option, but it may take time.

Perhaps it has grown back by now? 😀

This past summer, I was standing on our back lawn when I heard a crack and a second later a mighty crash in the forest. I went to find a 22" diameter pine tree had snapped about 4 feet off the ground. From a canker.

It happened on a perfectly still day with no wind.
