White plastic screen fell into gas tank on XG3140

Saw the whole can for like $45 at local tractor dealer. I already have a lot of $ in all the 5 gal cans I have now...hate putting more on top of that. Will eventually do something better. My little tractor sips diesel and for as long as I ever have to play (errr work) in a single day, 5 gal at a time is plenty. Otherwise, I'm storing gasoline for small engine stuff but mostly as a supply for small backup generator. So 2x per year when I dump all that into the vehicles and then go swap out for fresh fuel, I curse my enviro-spouts and crappy 5 gal cans, but not enough to spend several hundred $ to replace them all either.

I would like something better like a rolling 35-40 gal deal (gas buddy?) with hand pump. Definitely would like something better for the tractor just due to the placement of fuel filler top middle of hood making holding a 5gal suspended and engaging the enviro-spout awkward. But I don't deal with them frequently enough to justify spending much more....

There's also a gas station about 3/4 mile from my property where my tractor stays. So really I could spend the extra time and just go there for fuel and skip the 5 gal diesel cans entirely.

Most of the rolling containers with a pump are only rated for diesel. The ones rated for gas are topically gravity feed. For a while, I used a 40gal plastic drum and put a crank style hand pump on it. It worked, but it was bulky and leaky and took up floor space in my shop and I don’t go through that much diesel anyway.

So just the other day, I went to Rural King and bought a 5gal diesel jug for $15 and a high flow EZ-Pour kit for $10. Worth every penny to me and still cheaper than the $45 you spent for the ridiculous safety spout can.

I got tired of spilling fuel on the tractor and sometimes myself, so I got lazy and got a battery operated Kerosene pump off of Amazon.

Takes a few minutes to fill her up but I don't spill anything, don't have to lift the can higher than sitting it on whatever attachment I have connected.

And I don't suck up anything in the bottom of the can.

I just added an o-ring around the plastic screen, snug fit but it would take allot harder hit to pop it in the tank now.

Good info...but, but, $49 for a 50 cent strainer?

You can get one from messicks for a few bucks. Same thing happened to my screen when I was refueling and the government mandated fuel can slipped off the lip and punched the filter out.

They have other stuff that will fit the XG3140. The 2017 NH Workmaster 40 is the same tractor.
