Glad to hear that this is a fairly simple fix. The third times the charm I guess.

There's an oddity with Kohler Command engines and Synthetic oil.

Every manual I've read (Kohler or Cub) states that my engine can only use Synthetic up TO 40 deg F.

No, I don't understand it either

The manuals I read states, "Synthetic 5W-20 and 5W-30 is acceptable up to 4 degree "C" or (40 degrees F)." They then recommed 10W-30. Why they do not want 5W-30 used is anyones guess. Kohler also has the following in their owners manuals.

"Synthetic oils meeting the listed
classifications may be used with oil changes
performed at the recommended intervals.
However to allow piston rings to properly
seat, a new or rebuilt engine should be
operated for at least 50 hours using standard
petroleum based oil before switching to
synthetic oil."

It would appear Kohler does not want Synthetic Oil used in a new engine until after Fifty (50) hours.

right, exactly what mine says.

Not sure why Kohler doesn't like Synthetic oil!

As I read the manual, I see no allowance for Synthetic above 40deg at all.

The part about the 50 hour break in is a separate paragraph from the oil recommendations.
