Who do you let borrow your trailer?

Two of my standard answers are, my insurance won't allow it, and if it's a GOOD friend or relative after I say #1 i then say I will pay for the truck/or trailer rental for you, which is $29.00 for a truck and less for a trailer.

No one has ever taken me up on my offer, but I look like a good guy for offering. In other words I tell them NO very nicely.

Lending to friends will only make enemies that's me experience.

I had a friend "borrow" 100 plastic chairs I had for his daughters wedding. He did everything possible to make it easy on me by picking them up, but when it came time to return them nothing but cricket sounds.

I eventually had to hire two guys and a truck to pick the up at his house where he stored them outside, so when I got them back I had to pressure wash them.

Another "friend" borrowed a jeep I had and took it on a harrowing jeep trail used it all day, and brought it back EMPTY and had the stones to complain how it drove.

Ya if you want to lose friends or see what there make of - lend then your stuff.

I'm almost out of "friends" so I can't afford to lend to any more.

I still don't get it,, unless you guys value an object like a trailer more than a friend. So what if a trailer comes back with a scratch or ding? It's a trailer for crying out loud! It makes for great stories around the BBQ with a beer. Or maybe you don't share your BBQ or a beer with anyone either. God blessed me with many things, trailer, tools, beer in the fridge.... Thanks God! I feel that I am blessed when asked by a friend or neighbor to borrow one of them.

I think it depends on what people do in return. We, every now and then, borrow a buddy's F550 dump to do some hauling. And always, we fuel it up. And with this buddy, we always exchange 3pt equipment. He doesn't have a tiller, we do, we till. So if he happens to be a good driver, and willing to share with you. It should go good.

I've had a few friends ask to borrow my trailer. They have a vehicle capable of towing it but no brake controller. Since no controller, no trailer, but I do offer to haul their stuff for the cost of fuel only when its convenient to do so. One friend and I just serviced his tractor this morning (200 hr) then tonight I hauled it back to his house during a blizzard. Left at 5 pm and got back at 830 for a 20 mile trip each way. Just took my time. Many accidents, cars and trucks all over the place. Went to PA last month with another friend to pick up a plow truck he bought. Again, he had no brake controller so he rode with me and paid for food and fuel plus I got a homemade apple pie from his wife upon our return. I don't mind doing favors for friends, eventually I might need the favor returned.
Someone mentioned tools and I used to loan out tools but don't anymore. I always assumed the person who borrowed it would return it but when I needed the tool I couldn't remember who borrowed it.

I'm not starting an arguement with anybody, namely skipro3, but when somebody returns something with scratches, dents, empty gas tanks or in pieces, with no offer to make it right, I take that as a sign of disrespect. Other than my son and BIL, I haven't loaned anything out in many years, and I'm not going to start now. After that, go get your own. If it came back in pieces, that's not much of a friend.

I read someplace (possibly on here) the easiest way to not loan out a trailer is to switch the hitch over to a pintle hook/hitch.. Hardly no one has the capabilities of hooking up to that - and if you claim your pintle hitch is corroded in your truck and cant be removed it completes the story..

also have air or air/hydraulic brakes on the trailer is a good deterent..

I guess I let my friends and family borrow my things. Most people know that I am a pretty **** guy and won't ask for certain things because the know they will wreck them.
For instance my FIL borrowed to 4 place snowmobile trailer 2 years ago, and had it loaded incorrectly hauling things back from a cow show. Long story short the trailer starting swaying, lost control, jackknifed and then ripped the tongue off the trailer and flipped her on her side. JUNK. But he paid the deductible and then I got a better one. My new one people borrow and its getting some scratches and dents but oh well it will happen some day I suppose.
Pretty much with everything around my parts if someone breaks something they make right by it, one way or another.

I definately loan more than I Borrow.

I will loan to my neighbor, Bryan, he's the guy that when I'm out of town and my wife gets spooked by a deer running around the house comes over, gets on a ladder, strings up spot lights in the trees and plugs them in so that she and my daughter can sleep with no worries. Therefore, I lend to him, if he breaks, he'd offer to fix and I'd say no and we'd probably fix it together.

My brother, first, he's my brother, second, he's never said no to me for any favor I've ever asked.

My dad, if I was not affraid he'd kill himself.

That's it.

I am the type I'll purchase or build my self rather than borrow.
