We got 7" or 8" yesterday...bit more then we expected but fell right in line with the predictions...

We're with you man! We cross country ski and if we wanted to see brown winters, we'd not have moved to the south side of da BIG lake. Love the stuff.
We just aren't accustomed to it coming this early. It's been a long time since I needed snowshoes in November; we aren't quite there yet, but close.

Last month I was talking to a retired neighbor who heads to Florida every winter; he said as soon as it started snowing he was leaving.
That night we got about an inch which hadn't been forecast... he was gone within a couple days.

For the folks who appreciate the cool white stuff, here is a few photos from here. We've got good snow here now, but not enough to take pictures of so these are taken years past.

That's what we're talking about! From December to March I would much rather get that than rain. A good winter is defined as one where I'm tired of snow and cold... we are off to the start of a good winter.

However - I will admit - there were times I wished for a cab. A particularly heavy snow and the weight causes the young pines to lean in along the driveway. As you plow past - each one will dump its load of snow right in your lap. On a mile long driveway there are hundreds like this.

Exactly. So after I pull the tractor out of the garage, my first mission is to get to the top of the driveway while everything is working well. To do this, I have to run the gauntlet of pines and hemlocks laden with snow. I cringe and duck knowing what is coming. Sometimes I can reach up and over and successfully jiggle a low lying branch I would hit in the next pass.

We got just a dusting last Thursday. Went to church over the mountain this morning (to Waynesboro, Va). It's evident that they got a bunch more. Think it was ice and then some wet snow and maybe a bit of wind over the mountain. There were A LOT of downed trees that had had their tops cut off where they'd fallen into the road on rte 250. The church apparently was without power from Thursday until around Saturday night.

We got 6-8 the other day and looks like we will get 3-5 tonight. Temps are supposed to drop to the teens so it will be sticking around for sure.

OTLSKI - my post #98 - the last paragraph regarding the 2x4 clamped onto the bucket. You should really give it a try - it DOES work.

I went out to where my snowsled has been since I drained the tank last March, poured fresh gas in, primed it until it picked up the fuel and it started on the first pull. Not bad for a 23 year old machine that's been run hard more than a few times and almost seized up at least once. Those old 380 twins weren't power houses but they were tough as nails.

True story. Bought my 94 Bearcat 340 as a Divorce gift to myself. Still fires up and runs like new.

We got another couple of inches coming tonight and tomorrow.
I neglected to clean off the 3" we got the other day after I had already gone out and plowed the 6" that we had overnight. So tomorrow I will be plowing early.

Yamforlife - when the snow gets really deep - say, 5' or 6' - how deep will that ATV conversion sink into the snow? All things being normal - whatever normal is..............

Oh oh, I found better "deep snow" photos

oosik - it will go through as "ArlyA" says "this Deep" the only time i have been stuck is when i have been caught up stumps of rocks that I could not see under the snow. the bigger the machine is the harder it is to get unstuck lol. it's amazing what it will go through! Great for trapping or ice fishing etc.

Been struck a few times when we got off the packed base or some drifting occurred. This is while doing XC trails and here, we really do receive some snow. This happens when you come around a corner and one of the front pods would get off the hardened base enough and you'd then get "sucked" off into never, never land. Then you can't back up because these machines with pods DO NOT like to go backwards plus you have some dam implement attached. Being stuck is a very frustrating time and photos become hard to take. But here's one!! :)

Every winter when we lived in Anchorage - a bunch of us guys would go out on a week to ten day adventure. Trailer everything up to Talketna and take off on our snowmobiles from there. We had a big sled that carried all our crap and a large military fuel bladder. Every day we would trade off pulling this miserable sled. The only rule for the unfortunate who was pulling the sled that day - he was tail-end Charlie and he HAD TO stay on the trail that the rest of us cut. We would normally run into snow 5' to 7' deep and if the idiot got off the trail with that large & heavy sled - it took quite a bit to get it back on the trail.

We would normally go out 350 to 450 miles to the NW of Talketna. Most all lands in AK are owned either by the State or Feds. In those days - 1970's - all the lands were wide open for exploration. God willing - if you had the supplies and the cojones - you could have ridden all the way to Barrow or Prudhoe Bay.

Beauty!! love it. I was snowmobiling long before there were "Trails" to ride on. We spent days going 10 miles ... now you can do it in half and hour on the trails. I think we had more fun back then working together to get ourselves unstuck lol!!
