Who is using Mobil 1 Delvac 15W-40 ? Analysis question also.

Friend of mine works for a large industrial manufacturing engineering plant and they are REALLY pushing this as a far better synthetic oil for diesels. To the point of 250 hrs. Myself, I won't be changing the intervals, 100 hrs is plenty, but will run it as better is better. Period. Haven't done it yet as I am waiting for a snow blowing job to get it hot. Will also take a sample the next 2 times to send it to Blackstone for analysis. Should I send one of the conventional oil this time or wait until I compare synthetic to synthetic. Have no issues at 1000 hrs, just curious.

Well if it meets your Diesel engine requirements, why not, however I’d use a 5w40 if they have one. As for UOA, take a sample with your current oil at change time. Then at roughly the same hours do a UOA sample with the Delvac and see how it compares. That way you get useful info regarding oil quality and a check for possible engine issues like over fueling, antifreeze contamination, air filter effectiveness etc… My 2cents, Dutchy

agree, i'd be using 5/40 in your ND climate. what grade oil have you been using?

We have been using 5W40 since our tractors first oil change, not one issue.

Go with your engine manufacturers OCI.

A problem in northern states is what works is not always what the book says. A neighbor used 15W-40 in his New Holland because the book told him to. When the rear oil seal failed, NH told him 5W-40 is the proper oil for our area, or 0W-40 if he can get it. They said they would replace the seal on their dime this time, and fill it with 5W-40 for its return. If he had further problems they would have the oil analyzed to make sure he didn’t change to the wrong oil. I run Delvac 5W-40 in all of mine. Black stone analysis last spring when I changed on my Kubota M7-171 was a tad high on aluminum. Kubota wants to do their own analysis when I change next spring. I’ll sample for both Kubota and Blackstone.

Try some John Deere "50 Plus" oil, even my older equipment of all brands likes it, and it will stop excessive wear to your cam or lifters like some of these other oils will. I think Rotella T is the only oil with zinc in it for the lifters and cam.

I think that is why Shell removed the SI certification from T6, ZDDP will harm catalytic converters.

Amsoil also has an oil for that too.

I use it in my tractors.

I run a new JD road grader with JD 50 plus oil. Change interval is 500hrs. I can't make myself run that long and change at 250hrs. The Service Tech frowns at me and says I am wasting money changing that quick.

My vote would be to start with a baseline analysis from your current oil. i'll be interested in your results because I personally started using Delvac a few years ago in my Bobcat. I was using rotella, but tried the Delvac after seeing it on sale with a rebate. The engine seemed to sound noticeably better at startup, so I just stuck with it for my Bobcat. I don't have any scientific proof that it is a better oil.

I also have Plus50 in my John Deere tractor right now, basically because I was already at the dealer buying filters. I do believe that Deere puts research into their products and has a reputation to protect. So both products are quality oils in my opinion, But that's just an opinion.

My diesels also have block heaters and are able to maintain normal operating temps in our coldest Michigan weather, so i still currently use 15w-40. Without the block heaters I'd probably already be using the Delvac 5w-40. I may still switch to the 5w-40 though, as I can't seem to find a single negative about doing so.
