Who makes Sears lawn/garden tractors?

If Sears sells it, I ain't buyin' 

I am far from being a big Sears fan, but I would also be interested in knowing why? I have bought their tools, lawn mowers, and some home appliances for years. Never have thought of them as "top of the line" but they have their place.

I had a SEARS that was made by Roper. 1985 It was 10HP, one winter it was left outside with the airfilter cover off. The cylinder filled with water. In April I drag it out pull the spark plug and replace the water with WD40, let set for 24 hours drained the WD40 and it started.Too bad the transmission was bad. I had the 40 inch snowblower on it and it rusted bad from the salt. Replaced it with a Mongomery Wards 18 HP MTD. Nice for the money but the brakes for the mower will not work and the blades are always on. After too many close calls I am replacing it with a JD LX280, to be delivered April. I am taking the mower off and putting a blade on for snow and grading THe 18 HP B and S is a worker.

I think I can tackle all your questions at once. Sears mowers are mostly built by Electrolux as already mentioned, but some are also built by MTD. MTD makes most of the smaller ones and the reason the models change is because they are batch built with all of MTD's brands.
Thats also why most people don't like Craftsman mowers. Sometimes they will have a batch built and only carry parts for a couple of years because of their low sales of that model. The Husky/Poulan/Weedeater based craftsman mowers are a better bet for parts than their MTD counterparts. Just my opinion though.

I used to swear by Sears and Craftsman(Even use to grunt walking through the department) Then I bought a 25 gal compressor, regulator did not work. went back to store the manager would not give me a replacement. After 15 minutes of arguing, I told her I wanted my money back. She did do that(which made no sense to me or the person I talked to from their headquarters)I only wanted a different one, and they did have them in stock.
Next, My brother purchased a 9hp Snow thrower(see Subjects in this catagory)We brought the first one back after a number of problems, only to be replaced with one almost as bad.
These situations left a bad taste in my mouth about Sears and Craftsman. I found other brands of power and hand tools to be just as good or better.
That's just my opinion due to my experiences there. I still refuse to shop at Valu Home Center(local hardware store) over $8 worth of propane, but that's another story. ( )

I have a Weedeater brand 22" push mower with a B&S Quantum 4.5hp engine. This was built by American Yard Products which is now Electolux. This mower is now 11 years old. I figured I would replace it this year but I pushed it out of the garage primed it and the darn thing started on the first pull. So I changed the oil and air filter and I guess I'll just keep another year...**** thing won't die.

All I've ever done was change the oil and air filter every season and sharpen the blade. I was kind of looking forward to a shiney new push mower but the Weedeater mower won't die.

Stidman, where did you come up with Ryobi? You may have meant to say Roper. AYP, Electrolux, Roper all the same. If the first 3 letters are 917 it is made by AYP (american yard products) 247 (MTD) Take a look at this site for more info on the first 3 numbers of the model number.
