Who sells large sockets made in America?

Thinking most of the better tools sold by sears are made in U.S.A..Some of the cheaper are made overseas to compete with the cheaper brands. I like them simply because of the ease of replacement and strength. For me, Sears is alot easier to find than snap-on or other just because of where I work. Bird can probably say for sure, but I believe all the better brand of Sears tools are made by Allen. Well known for the Allen Wrench.

Nope, I don't know who makes the tools for Sears.

All Sears Craftsman brand hand tools have been made by Danaher in the USA since 1994 and previous to that by Stanley in the USA (see above post). I am not sure who makes their off-brand Companion tools.

Sears has a set of 3/4" drive sockets. I recently bought a set of large wrenches from there as well. All of the sockets and stuff I buy at Sears still say Made in USA.

Many Sears sockets were made in Japan for years. A few years back they moved the production back to a US manufacturer. They made a big deal of it in their advertising. This is also true of Sears wrenches.

I posted my last post prior to reading this. I have numerous sears sockets that say made in Japan on them. When I was in college (68-72), I worked summers for an electrical firm in New Britian Conn. I was in a New Britian Machine (Husky Brand) plant numerous times and saw many sockets being private labeled for Sears. I actualy believe New Britian Machine was a subcontractor for Stanley for forged tools and Stanley was a subcontractor for New Britian Machine for other type tools.

Craftrsman or Sears Companion brand?

Craftsman brand hand tools (sockets, wrenches, etc) have always been made in the USA by Stanley or Danaher (or one or their numerous USA based companies or plants). My guess is that your Sears sockets are not Craftsman brand but one of the several house brands that Sears sells like Companion.

Solo, according to their website, Wright has been around a long time, the specs on their tools look OK, and they aren't cheap, but I don't recall every seeing one of their tools, or ever even hearing of them, so I simply know nothing at all about them.

My parents bought me a set of 1/2 inch Wright sockets for Christmas when I was 12. I have abused those sockets and rachet for the last 30 years and have never had a breakage. When I was younger, and far less careful than I am now, I put a ten foot pipe on the end of the rachet to break loose a stuck bolt. That set cost less than $15 when it was purchased new.

Let's try this again. I went to a local Sears looking at hand tools and was told they're cutting down the stock they carry...OK. I looked online at Snap-On and it seems a few wrenches cost as much as other brand's whole sets...hmmm. I needed to hold a trailer ball, w./ 1+9/16" between flats, steady while tightening the nut (no I don't want to mung it up w./ a pipe wrench) and I can't find a vendor for a decent open end that size. I went to tighten up a thru bolt on my BH frame whose head is 15/16" and had to use two sockets one 1/2" drive, one 3/8" drive when I really needed an open end 15/16". I also need a very long handled 17mm wrench capable of holding a bolt while I fish it into the base of my dump truck's rear pocket so I can feed it thru the hole and fasten the nut on the outside (don't try this in the sun). So far I used a ratchet, 3 extensions and a U joint w./ socket on the end to remove it, but that won't work well putting it back on. And now there's these oversized truck lugs to deal with. Help!

Let's try this again.

I fear that insisting on American manufacture is going to leave you at the very expensive end of the scale.

In most cases, distribution, marketing, and retail represent 70-90% of the retail price of a consumer product.

If I buy a foreign-made set of wrenches at Harbor Freight, I am still supporting American Longshoremen, American Truckers, American Warehousemen, American Managers, and American Retail Clerks. Some foreign country gets the pollution from smelting and forging.

Plus, the price is right, especially for a guy who is not a professional mechanic.

That is the most logical argument I have heard in a long time. Just dont forget american doctors and nurses
