Whole house water filters

We use 5 micron filters replace every 2 month or so. I actually did not put the system in place, but previous owner told me anything coarser and the water will not be clean.

I had that issue with a rental property we own. After a major rain the renter would put in a coarse filter until it cleared up. I talked to the local driller that put the well in originally, and they came out and raised the pump. They also changed the orifice on the pump to reduce the amount of gpm it could pull. The idea behind this was to keep it from stirring up the sediment on the bottom of the well. This helped, they charged less than $200 including pulling the pump. The well had been there for more than 10 years before we purchased the property.

I am giving it a few more weeks before I pay someone $75/hr (2 to 4 hrs average time) to put a camera down the well..

One thing that I just found out last week is that someone did set a modular home behind us (i only go down that road about once a month at most).. So they had to dig a well, but I never heard them digging, so I am thinking they may have dug the well while we were out of town.. IF it was while we were gone on vacation (back story.. had pump issued, water cleared up, on vacation for a week and the water got muddy again) it would make sense that they got into our water vein/source..

when I was pumping out the well a few wks ago I caught some in clear bottles to see if it was getting clearer.. After about 24 hrs the particles will separate and sink to the bottom..

I am thinking of adding another filter OR replacing what I have with a dual filter set up.. BUT they didnt leave me a lot of room besides the bladder tank to put one.. What I am trying to figure out is what type and micron filter would be best for my muddy paste..

keep the thoughts coming

Brian,
I don't know if yuo mentioned it here but how deep is your well? Do you have any idea how deep the well in youor area run?

Are you in a aquafer and do you knowthe GPM ofyour well?

I got sick of replacing those little filters so I started checking into larger units. What I came up with works very well for our house and was not all that expensive especailly when one considers the cost of cartridges........................ a pool filter. I use the sand type and have had awsome luck. The most I have to do is backflush every now and then. I do have an additional filter on the kitchen sink and refrig for drinking water.

Brian I suggest a 10 micron until your water clears up then switch to a 5 micron. I use a 20", 5 micron, weave type and change it semi-annually.

Our well is 340 feet deep.. the pump is around 325 feet (it was raised up a while back after we installed a 'sand filter' on the pump).. its about 80 feet of casing and then rest is in granite.. they hit 3 different water sources (deepest was at 200 feet) and we get about 6 gallons a minute..

In our area wells run from 200 to about 700 feet deep..

We had the 'check valve/backflow valve' on the pump go out and stir up a lot of stuff (also reason for the sand filter since the pump was pulled).. Before the check valve went out there were no problems with the well for 3.5 yrs.. I only had to change the water filter about every 1.5 to 2 mths..

After those repairs we ran a lot of water and it cleared up after about 4 or 5 days - almost back to normal.. then we were gone on vacation for a week and came back to the muddy water again.. This is where we are now - trying to figure out why the water is still muddy..

I am now using 10"x2.5" 20 or 30 micron pleated filters (i was using a polypropylene graduated filter (see pic below) that went from 30, 20, and ended up as a 10 micron). All the filters are clogging in about 2 or 3 days (depending on usage).. the mud is a fine paste that coats the filter. After it dries it just drops off the pleated filters though.

ideally I think a 20" 30/40/50 micron fleated filter would be an ideal first filter, followed up by a 5 or 10 micron second filter.. BUT I dont think I have enough room to mount two separate filters, but possibly room to mount a single dual filter..

What is 'weave' type'?

How wide is your 20" filter? I have seen them in 2.5" and 4.5"? I was also wondering if the 2.5"x20" housings would fit my 10"x2.5" mount? Do any of the filter housings have 'standard' threads?

Does anyone have experience with 'permanent' or washable filters? I have seen some advertised in 10x4.5" size (big blue??) but not the 10x2.5" housing I have..

Does anyone know if 20"x2.5 housing and 10x2.5" have the same thread (ie interchangable on the same base)?

I would consider buying a washable filter because in the long run i would save money..

weave type = spun polypropylene It's like a tight wrapped thread in the shape of a cylinder 2.5"

Dunno about the mounts.
