WHY all this complexity?

The sooner we get self driving cars, the safer we'll all be.
Too many people driving on the road today are doing too many things other than actually driving the vehicle.
Which is why they don't see people slowing down, brake lights, ice, snow drifts, traffic barriers, missing spans to bridges, stop & yield signs, traffic lights, little children, dogs, big game, or prefabricated houses.

Don't you agree self-driving cars might be the ultimate in complexity?

Time to pass a law the prohibits everything while driving except driving. Take all the screens out of our cars and make driving the only activity allowed.

"About the infotainment system...what gets me is that each button does about 6 or so different things...I have no idea what they are for, and Ken (her husband) has been reading books on the controls all day. And Ken had to return to the dealership just to get the phones programmed so they will work on voice comment...God help me when I try to drive it...." Unquote.

Tis is my opinion too. Often the controls do different things from time to time, if you don't know where you are in the menu. My girls always punch buttons and change stuff, they figure it out to get hat they want, and leave it in a state where I don't know what to do. This much trouble learning the base system I'm sure glad I didn't buy the fancier system.

When I get it playing my phone's music, I'm a happy guy though, nice sound and sure enjoying the new F-150. As long as I don't have to dig thru menus. While driving.

To me it's not overly complicated. I fly along at 525mph with navigation systems, heating and cooling controls, and XM radio that's all touch screen and point and click.

It makes my Ford look like a child's toy.

I took my daughter on this trip since she's on Spring Break.

That one doesn't crash if it drifts 2 feet sideways. :)

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm here..... Sorry we cannot all have your skills as roads would be so much safer...consider that an honest compliment.

Back when I purchased my new 1985 Crown Victoria, heater and A/C controls consisted of two horizontal slide levers and one vertical fan switch. They served the purpose and were dead reliable. I probably could not decipher the climate controls on a new Ford car today without serious study of the owners manual.

To me, all this complexity and the huge number of buttons, etc. in today's new vehicles is a STUPID, STUPID idea. What is so important about having GPS, a wifi hotspot, etc. in a vehicle anyway? All these features do is create distraction for the driver.

The downside that no one speaks of is how much the sensitivity of these computers reading everything on a vehicle. I was driving down a mountain road with no turn off, just sheer cliff on one side mountain on the other. The "low tire pressure" light comes on. WHHHHHAAAAATTTTTTTT, not now. I'm getting a flat NOW, in the worst place possible ?

So now I'm sick, knowing if and when the air runs out I will have to ether stop in the middle of a highway or derive on on a flat and rims. Wait - everything seems fine? I purposely tun over the reflector road markers with each tire and I can clearly hear the THUMP THUMP THUMP.

I was puckered all the way down the mountain. Turns out it was a TMS throwing false codes. So I was sick over getting a flat for 30 miles.

Oh and has anyone prices new TMC sensors. They are about as much or more than the tire itself.

Funny thing is I can fly at 45,000', eat lunch, hold a conversation, be fully aware what's going on around me, all at 525 mph.

Now try talking to me while I'm driving and I will miss my exit. Can't read a email on my phone and walk at the same time. Can't change a light bulb and hold a conversation. You get the jist. It baffles my wife!

As my PM says....you will meet a lot fewer incompetent operators at 45,000 feet and 525 mph than you will at freeway speeds at ground level...
