Why are wheel spacers so expensive?

Along the same line----
Needed new front rims for my MT180D that are 12".
I had a machine shop water jet cut the inside 'discs' (like big washers) to fit the rims. The cost was $50. +/-
I then cut out the hole pattern from the trashed rims to use as a guide and drilled out the 5 stud holes on my drill press. To prevent wobble and mis alignment I inserted a bolt after each stud hole was drilled.
Oh, and I used 12" trailer rims (with center removed) as my new tractor rims. (cost $25 at scrap yard)

Mow having plowed all this winter's snow I can claim total success.

Now I could have used the same techniques to create spacers by using thick stock to achieve the spacing I would want.
With spacers the OD would not need to even be very accurate.

I would imagine there cost as much as they do because the people making them would like to actually make a little money for themselves after they get through paying all their overhead, such as machinery payments, building rent or mortgage, insurance, wages, etc, etc.

Its never the cost of the material and the couple of hours to machine it, its all the overhead that goes into having a business and making a living.

You sound like one of those Capitalists that made this country great! :D:D:D

If there were more of you there would be less whining.
