Why aren't basements built in the south?

Re: Why aren\'t basements built in the south?

In all of the new housing developments around here they do that perimeter drain into the basement and sump pump thing too. Why don't they run it to a pit in the yard and pump it from there?

Nice place, very attractive. Do you already have your Xmas lights up? Your way ahead of me.

Al,

That picture was from last year in the fall. I had just put the lights up. I had them back up this year for Christmas early though. My wife and kids love the lights!!! Got to keep them all happy /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif.

We are finally getting some snow here though, so that picture would look a lot different now!

Re: Why aren\'t basements built in the south?

Here's my Dream house built in 2002 in PA - Full Basement under the living area - size 32' x 60' - One benefit is I can easily add wiring or plumbing in the future - Located on a corner lot plus a cudesac that wraps around back of house. If I have water in the basement I just open the garage door. (I'll have to get 1 of those X10 controls to send a signal to the garage opener receiver). Lots of room for attachments.

Re: Why aren\'t basements built in the south?

More dumb Aussie questions here (Having asked the basement question ages ago !!)

Clarence, your house doesn't seem to have many windows.

Is that a cold thing??

Over here, a house of that stature would look something like this (Refer attached)

See - big house but lots of big windows.

Your pic has me puzzled????

Normally it would be the wife's car.... but in TBN member cases, I'd have to guess something else /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Why aren\'t basements built in the south?

They don't do them so much now because $$$$$

They used to be great things. They were cooler, so you could keep veggies and other somewhat perishables in there as a refridgerater. In older construction types, you had to get below the frost line by a significant amount. They were a great place to put the boiler for the house heating, as well as the coal to run the boiler. The could also provide protection from ravaging weather like tornados.

Why make them now when you have compact central air units that do not need the room the boilers did, and we have refridgerators?

My Uncles houses in Utah and Wyoming had/have basements. Teh house in Wy has a nice living area, that is cool in the summer. He has no moisture problems.

It would nice to have a basement in Az during the summer. It'd be the coolest part of the house. IMHO, of course...

Nothing like having a Dear on the 1st floor and a Deere in the heated basement - JD 4310 /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif and maybe a few Deer in the back yard.

Re: Why aren\'t basements built in the south?

The house has a total of 22 Low-e Double Hung Windows and 5 Steel entrance doors - No large picture size windows - I was trying to get the most square footage for the $ - The heating system is powered by fuel oil - Here is a front view of house.
