Why do Diesels last longer than IC's?

Yea I sure long for the old engines that you could actually work on. These new ones you might as well forget even trying.

Egon

I have posted pics like this before.

This is one of those "I don't really hafta do this but just feel like it ones !!"

I had previously gone through this hole many times and one day found it way deeper than it had ever been !!!

Cheers

Yep too easy !

The first time when I didn't know the depth, the water came in the front windows, the vents etc. Not pretty !!

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

I think modern petrol engines will last just as long as a diesel providing they are treated correctly.

I have to second that. I have a Jeep Cherokee with a 2.5L, 4 cylinder gas engine in it. This motor has 225,000 miles on it. It uses no oil between oil changes[does leak a bit, but never more then ½ qt low in 3000 to 4000 miles] It does have a few running problems, but that is with the FI system, and the parts are not avable any more to fix[this was before Chrysler, its an AMC] I did a compression check on it last summer, and all cylinders were good, and the oil PSI is always over 40PSI. If I can keep the rest of the truck together I can see this running for another 80+K.

Now on the tractor front. My wife’s Ingersoll224 with a 14HP Kohler single cylinder motor has just under 1700 hours, and runs well, with no problems.

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

This is a great question! So far, I'm not convinced by any argument given here. Gasoline engines today last much longer than they used to. I think this might be because of the electronics used for timing the spark and other feedback processes (temperature, emissions etc.) and regulating gas/air flow. Diesels never had to worry about this.

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

Automotive Detroit claims by the year 2010 that as many as 40% of vehicles in the states will offer Diesels. The key is Germany. Volkswagon has taken the engineering of Diesel for cars to a point that the states is still learning. Most of the comparison here is trucks. By the way, although I'm a power stroke owner myself, GM has done wonders with the Duramax. And it's the quietest thing out there.

Discovery or TLC ran a show about 6 months ago on two UCLA students that drove a VW minivan coast to coast stopping at restaurants along the way to filter and fill up. When the market is there, they will burn cleaner.

Notice Ford's new FFV (Fuel Friendly Vehicles) being put out over the last couple years. I still don't see any "special" fuel pumps yet. Heck, I'm happy when I find a diesel pump I can use my card in. Obviously something happening or Ford wouldn't be offering these cars.

One of my thoughts on this was improvements in metalurgy(sp?). There have been a lot of advancements in the last 20-30 years. Rings and bearings last longer now. Cylinder bores hold up better.

That is Flexable Fuel Vehicle. Also all the new Ford made Mazda B3000 pickups have had this feture sence 98. One of the guys at work has one, and has been thinking of trying it out, but has never found any pumps.

Re: Why do Diesels last longer than IC\'s?

diesel costs more here in the st. louis area, a lot more, than unleaded gas.

ppm [price per mile] is out of line for cost savings, so i don't expect any large gain on a diesel powered car.

i was rudely awakened to this price gouging when i bought a diesel tractor :(
