why do they make videos

I think the question is what is the motivation to put the time, effort and expense into making videos to post on You Tube. like others have said, there is some financial return if you have enough followers and people watching your video's, but I don't think there is enough of that to justify all the effort so many put into making the videos. I personally have posted a few just to be able to share them with others. My favorite is of my wife shooting a wild hog on our land.

The main reason I think people post video's is the same as why they went on Jerry Springer. It was to be discovered. They use You Tube as a way to get their faces out there with the hope that somebody on TV notices them and puts them on a TV show. Where do those people on HGTV come from? What about all the car shows? One of our favorite TV shows is American Ninja, and a huge number of the people on the show also have You Tube channels. Same thing with the Voice and America's Got Talent. The producers find them on You Tube.

Even the big news networks are calling in You Tube people to be on their shows. It's become a stepping stone to promote yourself.

I'm one of 'those' guys. I have made a few videos to show others a DIY that I thought was useful or interesting. I have watched many DIY videos over the years and I appreciate the effort they put into it. Maybe some do it for vanity, but I decided I had something to contribute and am paying it forward. I didn't start doing them with the idea of making money and haven't to date and no plans to drive it in that direction. If I don't do another video, I'm totally fine with that.

I can see how some could get obsessed and try to make some decent coin doing it... I say good for them!

It is nice to see how others approach DIY tasks vs. watching a TV DIY show where the subject isn't exactly on what I am interested.

Also one truly learns by doing. Making/posting a decent video is a challenge and is kind of fun. I surely don't try to make a video out of each project I undertake because it does require some thought, discipline, and a lot more time than just gettin' er done!

I think that is a very small percentage of youtubers. I'm sure some have hopes of being noticed and getting a big TV break but for the vast majority of them they just want to be heard. YouTube gives the average joe the ability to spew their self proclaimed "expertise" to millions

Being a famous entertainer nowadays doesn't mean you have a sitcom. PewDiePie & Logan Paul have more fans than the whole cast of the biggest prime time TV show......I only know those names because of my kids

The answer is simple and has already been answered...people like to express themselves...The same reason people post on message boards...not everyone is an exhibitionist not everyone is seeking fame...

If a picture is worth a thousand words...a video is worth...?

My son is producing his 3rd utube video, he does them for fun. His are kids train videos, like thomas the tank engine. He creates the scenery, writes the script, records the clips for the scenes, records the audio clips (the whole family has voice parts), then he does all the video / audio editing, including music credits.

Because of his video making, one of his professors had him make a tutorial for video editing. It also got him a job as a sports producer for the college tv station.

How different is it than posting a thread on TBN? OK, YT is visual instead of (implied) verbal. But really how different is it?

Granted, a lot of posts on TBN are more Questioning than Observations, but there are PLENTY of "observations" as well. I won't embarrass anyone one by mentioning names, but it don't take long to find 'em.
