Why do you know nothing about your neighbors?

I was really trying to be a little humorous, but also saying that meeting neighbors can have lots of different affects. You are absolutely right that meeting and knowing neighbors is important no matter whether you live in the country or in the city. It establishes a community.

At our old house, I did the older couple next door's snow removal and he did my lawn. I also helped them with their TV and VCR clocks.

Another old guy lived down the block. I would loan him $20.00 on the fourth week of each month and pick up groceries for him. He'd pay me back on the first.

They lived catty corner from each other for over 40 years. They both introduced themselves to me and my wife, however, they never introduced themselves to each other! Very strange. All were nice folks, but didn't take the time to say "hi" ever.

I have a couple of college coeds as neighbors and they're always out in the yard wearing skimpy outfits. After reading this thread, I've been thinking about inviting them over to get to know them better in a "neighborly way", but I don't think my wife will go for it.
She's already told me, "You spend enough time checking them out, you should know them well enough by now."
So I don't think that's happening for me.

In our development most every one is known by their house number. and don't assoiate with each other.

It was my choice to move in to a town house devolement we had a single home on a dead end street knew all the neighbors and their kids and we all chipped in together. I hated to leave that, but with 2 property and never enough time to work on them both we down sized.

Hello all
We just got lucky...
Back in the late 70's when we were house shopping, we bought a house in a quiet neighborhood. Nice family across the street. So with in a year two more young families moved in, so now we are four. About a thousand pot lucks later, 11 kids total, (the baby of the neighborhood is a senior in college), five marriages, and 5 grand kids and counting...
Years ago we kid about having some land with an extra house for the nurse, and start looking for land. After much looking, one afternoon we pick up a little paper at the DQ. "Water Front Property" for sale. This was a Saturday afternoon, we were signing papers Sunday 10:00pm.
So we are moving the neighborhood in a few years!

Today we have a visitor from Belgium. It is a long story and in a round about way I was contacted by a woman in Florida who has a tour company. She is thinking about organizing weekly tours to our farm, would be for he months of September and October. They would rent our Guest House our main house and for overflow if needed our neighbor up the hill will rent his house. so the woman from Florida sent a scout, a journalist from Belgium to visit the property and report back. the journalists name is Kim. So Kim shows up tady about 4pm and i give her the hurry up outside your becasue I know it is going to be dark shortly after 6pm. Of course no tour would be complete without meeting our neighbor Roco, and Lulu and Renee. Roco was outside with a pitchfork turning the dirt around his olive trees. Lulu and Renee invited us in for a drink since it was after 5pm. The visits to our neighbors property really enhanced the presentation of our property. It is so pleasent to know your neighbors! This could be some serious rental income for us. If we did this we would probably approach lulu and renee about renting their home to us as then we would need a place close by. their home is adorable jsut 2 rooms an open kitchen/livingroom/dining room and a bedroom. They ahve a home in town and jsut spend their days at their second home so it would be ideal for us since we would only need a place to sleep. We want to be able to still wrok on our farm. Also our other neighbor the uphill neighbor has a motorhome, if he doesn't get rented out with overflow and need the motorhome for himself we could rent that. We do have a full bathroom with hot water and a shower in the barn.

Back to my point, if we would have never made an effort, and beleive me it was an effort when we moved here we had so much going on and we needed to learn how to farm olives, if we had not simply stopped and taken time to invite our neighbors over for a cocktail and a meal now i would never have been able to stop over to see them with the journalist. I know one thing, those neighbor visits enhanced the presentation of what we have to offer.

The day that the dozer pushed over the first tree to begin the construction of the "dream home" for my wife and I, the neighbors raised ****. It was because the land we built the house on was given to me by my Grandparents. These "neighbors" were pissed because they thought that they were going to buy some land (cheap) from my Grandparents.

Once in a while I would run into one of these fine people when checking on construction. I told all of them, "either I can be a good neighbor or I can be a bad neighbor, it's up to you to decide!

So today after a couple inches of snow, guess who shovels thier driveway by hand....not me!

No picnics scheduled in the near future!
