Why does a TPH log splitter have a pressure relief valve?

JJ, I dialed it all the way down and the detent still does not kick off. I will go get pictures of the valve now and post them via edit in a couple of minutes.......

The last one I worked on that the the detente didn't kick out because they had the cylinder lines wrong and wound"the releif" (actually detent) in to to get it to work

Your detent setup is at the back of the valve on the sane side as the in port.

The wood stove takes 4' "sticks". I don't have much oak at all here. Mostly I have beech, some ash, birch (yellow and white) apple, maple and wild cherry along with trash pine. I only take maple and cherry spars and apple trimmings from my orchard. We sugar up here so a maple tree has value as do my apple trees and I cannot bring myself to cut a live cherry.

JJ, so maybe the mistake I am making is dialing it all the way down???????? if that adjustment is for the detent relief only, I should prolly be backing it off.

I am going to check it for rust and schmutz.

The valve relief is at the front by the spool shaft. Did you do anything to the detent section, which is at the back of the valve?

I am confused by your references.

On my pictures, there is an external adjustment nut (looking top down) on the right aft side of the valve. There is a locking nut, when backed off allows the adjusting nut to be moved. I dialed the adjusting nut nearly to its seat and locked the nut.

As I typed earlier, this "seemes" to make the detent "firmer" in that it took more force of hand to move the valve lever out of detent position.

First, I believe you have been adjusting the detent relief. Install a gage and set the pressure to about 1400 psi. If it will not kick out and return to neutral on the return stroke, carefully remove the detent adjusting screw, spring and ball, and inspect. Clean or replace. With the gage still installed, check the PRV for the valve which is on the front by the spool shaft, and set it the same as the tractor relief setting, or 50 psi lower.

thanks J J,

Got it, will do.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

My American TPH splitter has a pessure relief valve. Since tractors all have their own PRV in the hydraulic circuit, why does this splitter's cylinder control have a PRV?

Set properly, is it designed to "kick off" the retract cycle detent?

I'd rather the PRV on the cheap 100$ logsplitter valve take the beating than the ??multi-hundred dollar one burried in the inner depths of my tractor take the beating. Generally when i run an implement or loader with it's own valve off my tractor hyds.. I set it's relief about 50 psi lower than my tractor relief.. ie.. 2450 implement relief for a 2500 tractor relief.. that way the cheap and easilly replaced prv cracks first...

To increase the pressure re the PRV on the splitter, do you turn the adjustment clockwise? And thus counter clockwise to reduce the PRV trigger point?

I suspect the pressure on this splitter has been turned down to below the detent relief point. I cleaned out the detent adjusting mechanism and the only thing adjusting the nut does is make the detent work in the first place. Even at the least amount of pressure it takes to actually set the detent, it will not release at the end of the cylinder stroke.

I have to get a hyd pressure guage.
