Why does a TPH log splitter have a pressure relief valve?

/ Why does a TPH log splitter have a pressure relief valve? #11
I cannot find the hydraulic pressure capacity for the L3710, but the American specification say the splitter can take 2500#. I would think the tractor is less than that........as the loader cylinders are half the diameter of the one on the splitter.

Kubota L3x10s have a 2500psi implement pump pressure spec. That does not
mean that it is doing that, however. Get a $10 guage and check it.

Note that if you use a valve on a PTO pump system or dedicated engine,
there is not usually any relief valve. The maker of your splitter valve
does not know where you are getting your hydraulic power.

Also, the detent relief valve has an air vent and can get rust in there...I
have seen it.

Thanks. The gauge is a good idea...........

That is an absolutely false statement.

Typically the detent kick-off is set at about 1000 psi, you can set it lower by trial and error if you want, but it really doesn't make much difference. Once the ram is fully retracted, the hydraulic pump builds pressure to 1000 psi in a fraction of a second anyway.

Sure would like to see some side , front, and back pictures of that valve. Is there a name on it?

A good many aux circuit have their own relief to protect that circuit, and anything used downstream will be protected. If you should increase the splitter valve above the tractor relief setting, the tractor relief should come on when you hold the lever in the extended position. If it doesn't, there is leakage somewhere. If that is a true log splitter valve, the lever should detent on the return stroke, and release to neutral at the detent pressure. Some detent reliefs are adjustable.

JJ, I dialed it all the way down and the detent still does not kick off. I will go get pictures of the valve now and post them via edit in a couple of minutes.......

You have to put that gage in the system to see what is going on.

Does the valve go into detent on the return stroke, and what happens to the lever, when the rod is fully retracted? Do you have to pull it out of detent. I would clean the detent relief, and inspect the spring and ball, and if rusted, get a new one or new valve.

I will get a gage and check it out.

Yes, the lever stays in detent position and I have to pull it out, to neutral. The tractor's hyd pump labors a bit, but does not go into pressure relief mode.

I am done with the splitter for the season, as of this morning, (see production results) so the next rainy day I will pull the valve apart and see what is going on.

Side note, when I dialed down on the PRV I noticed that it took marginally more force to pull the lever out of detent......... wierd.

I have a log splitter valve here from a HF 24T splitter. The detent control
never worked right. Upon removing it, I cleared out a rust plug. There
is a small breather hole near the detent RV. Left out in the rain, water
got in and caused the problem, IMO.

(Note that this splitter has a 9hp Honda engine, and the only RV protection
is on the valve.)

Cripes Dead horse them are some big sticks you feed your fireplace or woodstove! Around here I have to cut every thing at about 16" so that it will fit in the woodstoves. My woodstove I left at my last house would take 26" pieces. Is that oak you are burning? It would be nice to have some more oak around here. I think the best stuff to burn here is Madrona or Maple followed by Douglas fir.
