You are making some large assumptions.

#1. Service calls come in the service entrance after being vetted prior to entering onto the property.

#2. Meat heads are screened and eliminated; they never arrive.

Work done inside of my residence (that I cannot/do not do) is only done under my immediate observation and supervision. No exceptions.

I expect and want that level of service, and therefore I pay for that level of service.

RFB, you must be very pleasant to work for.

You are the customer who:

1. Insists on no contract

2. Will pay nothing down

3. Will not pay upon completion of the job

4. Insists upon holding back a portion of the agreed upon price

5. Never uses the same service provider twice, because they have gotten wise to you

Too bad.

Why should I have to pay more to a dealer that does what is expected? I should not do business with one who does not, and they should also not have a dealership. Would I shop for a doctor? You don't shop for doctors, but I will suggest that as businessmen you have shopped insurance and I bet pricing had a lot to do with it. And as a old former jarhead I would suggest that no one walks on Momma's floor with muddy boots because that will get us both in trouble.

davitk,

You must have dug deep for those assumptions, I won't venture where.

1. I insits on contracts.

2. I will pay 20-30% down depending on what we are talking about.

3. I always pay on sucessfull completion and I verify that all subs have been kept current on thier pay.

4. Yes you should hold a portion back. Untill complete.

5. If the job is done right, why would I not use the same provider.

What kind of business do you provide?

Actually, I switched my business liabily to American Family this summer and forked over an additional 300.00 annually in the unlikely event I have a claim. I want someone I know and trust (local agent) covering my backside.

lets see... RFB, if I make a service call to your house and have wet or muddy, shoes, they come off at the door or get covered. The meat head from who-gives-a-shop comes along and sets up his miter box on your wife's dresser to cut the window trim. Who is more effecient and costs less? Think about it.

Maybe we are living in the past and service is going out the window! :( I have always made a living on a handshake and a promise. I have done six figure jobs and did not want paid to completed . Davitk, we could be a dying breed.

I think we might have to move this thread to political section!

As soon as a contractor wants money down, and money as he goes, I start worrying. I know some guys will say, they have been stung, so they want money up front. I have hired out work up to $20k without them asking a penny down, I like that. It makes me feel good knowing they have confidence in me, that I will fulfill my part, and I know they are not going "broke", or "leave town with my deposit".
I do business the same way, the only exception being if it is a very long term project.

Not all customers are desirable. Some are better to let walk as you can never please them no matter what you do.

Customers are the principal reason that this trend exists; customers tolerate it.

The very fact that untold millions of $ are spent per year in advertising should speak volumes to sentient customers. They want your business and are willing to pay to get it, because in the end, they profit.

It is odd to hear that a customer base tolerates instead of giving their business, getting the business, and often in the end.

When customers insist or walk, they exert the power of the market place, and it is substantial leverage.

Word of mouth is extremely important. "I got the best price at XYZ" from a satisfied customer" or "Their service technicians are inept and overpriced" from a dissatisfied one speaks louder than a billboard.

davitk,

Ad hominem will get you nowhere.

1. I insist on performance contracts.

2. Will pay what the contract stipulates

3. Will pay when the contract is fulfilled upon the agreed upon terms

4. Only hold back the portion that is prescribed as a "performance bond" in the contract, and then paid as per #3.

5. Will use whatever vendor supplies my needs commensurate with my liberties a a customer.

6. When hiring a large contract for my residence, perform background investigations upon the contractor, BBB research, and develop a database of his assets for seizure in the event of malfeasance.

My "handshake and a promise" occurs after the contract is signed by all parties. This is all accomplished in an even toned, clean, professional and cordial manner.

Like I said, its nothing personal; its business.
