Why not a 'big box' store?

Re: Why not a \'big box\' store?

I'm a bit familiar with the Deere tractors at HD, and they are the same models (low end) that are sold by Deere. Also, the Deere set-up techs are used to set them up.

However, I've been around the service manager who gets the call or the visit from the guy who bought the Deere at the HD and says the tire won't hold air, and there must be something wrong. Not happy when the service manager quotes the hourly rate they charge for fixing flats. This is but one example. Warranty things are covered no matter where its purchased, but dealer customers probably get preferential service when needed. Just a no-brainer, IMO.

Nice part, IMO, about buying from the box store, is it doesn't involve a salesman. Sometimes its just nice to go pick it out, and walk with it. No one asking if you need or want more attachments, or more bells and whistles to add to your purchase. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Welcome to the forum, and hope you are happy with your CubCadet. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Spider Dude,

Welcome to TBN. You may want to consider filling out your profile -- it can sure help in giving advice. You never stated how large your lawn is, so the model CC you are considering might be ok for you.

Re: Why not a \'big box\' store?

beenthere,
The way I found to avoid the salesman was to do as much research as possible before going there. That way I have my mind mostly made up and dont really need them for much. Having worked at car dealers I learned to humor/ignore the sales staff pretty effectivly as well.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Why not a \'big box\' store?

In my case I bought my 1042 from TSC. My dad and I both bought 1042's and they gave us a deal since we were buying two tractors from them. They matched a 10% off coupon I had from Lowes and they delivered both of our tractors free of charge. The dealer we went to made us a decent offer (about 5% off the price and free delivery) but when we went back a week later they reneged on their offer and were rude to us for even suggesting they come down on the price in the first place.

Re: Why not a \'big box\' store?

Please note that I purchased a 2042 from my local dealer. The reason I purchased the CC would have been the same regardless what model = SERVICE.

As we all know, most of the big box stores hire people that have very little knowledge about most of the products in the store.

I would put my dealer and his mechanics up against the CC factory technicians every day of the week.

To date, I have purchased the following equipment from the same dealer and never have a service issue:
2 chain saws
1 snow blower
2 string trimmers
1 hedge trimmer
1 wood chipper
1 generator
1 roto-tiller
1 pressure washer
1 self propelled mower
1 push mower
1 ATV
1 back-pack blower

If I have a problem that I cant fix = ONE phone call and he picks the unit up = repairs it and delivers it back and it's always at a decent price and working perfectly. In addition, every time I stop in to buy anything (parts, oil, filters, etc.), I always get 10% to 20% off = like frequent flyer miles.

Just my opinion = keep the local guy in business - they will always support your needs.

Re: Why not a \'big box\' store?

My lawn is only about 1/2 acre with almost no obstacles to mow around and no steep hills. I dont need a mower with a 46" deck but for the $100 difference in price and stepping up to the Kohler v-twin it seemed like a better deal than the 1042. I went to the dealer today and he matched TSC price for the 1046 at $1699, but he doesn't have any in stock and it will be 2 weeks before he gets one. He has the 1042 and the 1045 in stock. Should I wait for the 46 or just get a 42 or 45? I never thought shopping for a mower could be so nerve wracking:)
He also told me in a round about way that his customers will come first over the big box store customers which at times could be a 3 week wait.

Re: Why not a \'big box\' store?

Who would you rather have assemble your tractor when it comes in from the distributor,
The pimply faced high school kid part timer at the box store or the factory trained mechanic at the dealer?
