Why people can\'t discuss politics politely

What exactly is politics and why do folks get so upset about it?

Poli = many
Tics = blood suckers

Many blood-suckers /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Oh. Nevermind. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

(Disclaimer: not to be discussed seriously...may cause elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, liver problems or brain damage. Add tax, tag and tiltle. Void where prohibited.)

Re: Why people can\'t discuss politics politely

I think theres the same drama in the "oils" forum.
Without naming names, theres an individual who my wife would say suffers fom S.P.S. (use immagination to fill out the syndrome name)
This individual will argue every point disrespectfully and must have the last word.
I hope not to offend kind engineers, but I would hazard a guess he is one. Book knowledge and a few tainted statistics as a substitute for real world experience in this case.
There now I vented.

Would rather attend a funeral outside in the pouring rain than discuss either politics or religion. Everyone has their own opinion on each and as a result many conflicts arise all to suddenly.

Re: Why people can\'t discuss politics politely

So would I....... as long as it isn't my own... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif What I have never been able to understand is why rational disagreement isn't permitted in any of the discussions. Seems that if an opinion is contrary to someone else's, they can't handle the "rejection" and then all discussion is shut down. I have been in contact with some of the old timers of TBN and the common thread of the reason they no longer post is that discussion has been stifled so much that it is no longer enjoyable. They have pointed out that there is only so many times that you can discuss oils, implements, etc. and that life has to contain more that that to keep their interests. Now, please lets not allow my comments to start this thread down the road of flames. I have already been roasted more than once for being outspoken. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Why people can\'t discuss politics politely

I enjoy listening to an oposing view of just about any topic. If somebody can rationally explain it to me, I love to listen. Doesn't matter if it's politics, religion or just about anything.

What I can't take is an opinion that can't, or wont be supported, by some sort of reasonable explination. If you believe something to be true, then feel free to enlighten me.

The only person that bothers me on this website is the one who has nothing to say, but copies and pastes without an inteligent comment.

I hear you Eddie and agree 100%.

I have always heard it said that you can't discuss politics or religion. That makes no sense to me. If we don't learn talk about it in a rational, logical manner, then those "many blood-suckers" will discuss it for us behind our backs with zero input from us, or consideration to us. And I doubt we would like the outcome of "their" discussions.

Re: Why people can\'t discuss politics politely

Although I have been involved in, and enjoyed debating politics on this site (it just evolved that way) in the past, I must agree that it serves no purpose. The two parties are so diametrically opposed on core issues, that one cannot seriously hope to convince someone on the “other” side of the aisle to change their mind about anything.

I may convince you that 15W-40 is a better choice in summer than 10W-40, but I won’t convince you (should you currently hold the opposite opinion) that the war in Iraq is justified. Being an adult, people make opinions and hold to them pretty firmly about that sort of stuff.

No matter how right I am, nor how wrong they are, I just can’t convince them. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So why start a fight that can’t be won? It’s like Joshua in the movie War Games. Better to play chess.

Re: Why people can\'t discuss politics politely

Cracker barrel is a good place to talk politics,or just a good place for disagreements.I get bored with debate too easily so that makes it hard to keep my footing needed for the long term.Basically you have to be ok with not being able to settle a disagreement,otherwise aggrevation ends it.I've found very few people can do this but some at the site above have mastered it.

Yep.. there's just a few things that can get out of hand when discussed enmasse.

Your mate, politics, religion, vehicles, sports affiliation, geographic location /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif ( Did I leave any out /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )
