Re: Why we can\'t reach the speed of light?

HEEHAW, I'm reminded of an advertisement in the April 1 edition (forgot the year but about 1972) of an Electronic engineering journal. The ad was for an osciloscope with super fast (pre-anticipation rise time) that would display a "butterfly" wave form. Of course it was pure hokum but the nerds/geeks who forgot or didn't notice the April 1 pub date were all in a tizzy argueing over whether it broke causality or how it would have to use some quantum effects to begin the vertial deflection before the "event of interest" came over the "time horizon" of causality. It was a hoot for those of us who "got it" and a source of embarassment for the educated morons that were duped.

Oh by the way... I learned a good response for "horn blowers at lights" from a friend of mine in college. Light changes and he didn't "peel out" quickly enough for the a$$ behind us who blew his horn when he anticipated the light would change. At the next light the bozo blew his horn when the light changed and by buddy made no attempt to go. As we were in the center lane of three lanes going our way during rush hour we had a "captive" audience. My buddy gets out, opens the hood and pulls the dipstick out, and takes it back to the horn blower. The guy was busy rolling up his non power windows and locking the doors when my bud asks him what he thinks. Is it down enough to add a quart or do you think I should wait a while as I don't want to let it go below a quart but don't want to over fill it either, gee what do you think I should do? The guy was not quite sure whether to sh** or go blind so I think he closed one eye and far***. My bud says, well thanks anyway and returns to the car, reinserts the dipstick and drops the hood.

I note that the guy behind us is looking a bit relieved but my bud produces a tire gauge and starts gauging the tires while cars are streaming by on both sides during a green light and watching in amusement during the reds. He goes back to the horn blower and starts asking for advice about whether he should balance the pressure in the tires by reducing them to all the same pressure or raising them to match the highest and if maybe since he often rides alone if he should carry a pound more on his side and on and on. The horn blower was on the verge of a nervous breakdown when my bud turned and came back to the car, got in, sat through a green light and then peeled out through the yellow just as it was about to turn red, leaving Mr. Hornblower sitting there, likely in wet pants.

The current century's version of that is: My bud gets out of the car and starts to walk back toward the horn blower who pulls a gun and empties it into my buddy, drives away and no one saw anything or wants to get involved.

When we lived in Chicago, I developed the theory that automobile horns were connected to the traffic lights via radio control. When the light turned green, the horns on the cars sounded automatically. This relieved the burden on the manner impaired drivers so they could be rude in other ways, ie. hand gestures and or screaming! It was entertaining at the traffic lights.

That would be my response to some fool who pulled a long metal object out from under his hood and was coming at me with it in his hand.

Of course I wouldn't be behind him blowing the horn to begin with so it is probably a moot point.

Re: Why we can\'t reach the speed of light?

Dozernut, I've seen ping pong paddles and home brew similarities with signs on them to flash at other drivers. Everything from silohettes of a raised middle finger (larger than life) to Bible quotes. My fav was one with please on one side and thanks on the other. Lady used the first to gain entry into thte stream of traffic and the other to reward her benefactor.

You know. of course, the light controllers at many intersections can be overridden by a strobe light on an emergency vehicle which gives the emergency vehicle the green light. The sensor that detects the strobe has a high pass filter in it to discriminate against slow rise time signals to reduce falsing. Although the strobe light on the emergency vehicles is visible, the sensor is also sensitive in the near infra-red portion of the spectrum which is invisible to the human eye. A small strobe light with an infra-red filter on it with a simple colimator to direct the beam toward the sensor will trigger the override circuit BUT be invisible to the naked eye resulting in all the traffic lights so equipped always going green for a vehicle so equipped "for no apparent reason." Of course, now after this post, a lot of tractors will start mysteriously getting the green.

Ozarker, Chill dude. This was in daylight. I know that properly trained martial artists can do great damage with almost any object as a weapon but would you really want to shoot someone who approached you in your locked car with windows up because they were showing you their dipstick (held sideways like when surrendering a sword? Lots of witnesses and all...

Well, your honor I didn't like the look of his used oil, it might even have been synthetic! I see. Clearly a case of justafiable homicide if there ever was one. We be proud o' ye. Yet another of them dipstick delinquents properly dealt with. Now if someone would just do something about the perverts driving around with out hubcaps with their wheel nuts showing...

Re: Why we can\'t reach the speed of light?

Yes, I know, as well as I am sure that you do, that there is no "origin" or center to the universe. The point of reference would not actually have to be fixed, in absolute terms, in space (although you could consider it to be for the purpose of this discusion) as long as it remained in the same inertial frame of reference throughout the experiment. In this case the most logical point of reference to use would be the location of the end of the wormhole that stayed "stationary" on the earth. You can't choose the end of the wormhole on the spaceship for your point of reference since that end must change inertial frames of reference in order to accelerate up to the SOL and then back down to "zero" again when it returns to earth. Wormholes:
Gosh, I've got lots of worm holes in my garden and there are also some in some dead trees. These are fairly stationary in reference to location on earth. You could use one for a reference if you so wish,

Feel better now?

Nope. Still waiting for someone to explain away the paradox of "all motion is relative" as it applies to your example.

Re: Why we can\'t reach the speed of light?

oombala, I'm so sorry. I checked the AKC registry (American Kubota Club) and that name has been taken. Perhaps you could consider an alternate spelling or another name. Just kidding of course, sounds fine. I sort of think of my Kubota as Kubby, not too imaginative I know but like having a swarm of bees buzzing in your head, there they are.
