Austin's Fox news reported:

""Yancy, the victimエs brother said, "He went to pull off on the side of the road as you usually do in the country to use the restroom. And as he was using the restroom his pants fell down to his ankles and he went to pick up his pants and that's when the snake bit him on his hand.""

Don, I almost wish I didn't know that. Man, that is bad. That is just terrible.

I really feel sorry for his wife and kids. Just terrible.

They had something similiar happen here a few years back. A guy had his hand in a cooler and made it to the hospital. He fell out of his truck and had a big snake attached to the hand, he too died. I hope this isn't one of those internet stories. But we heard this one locally, they said it was huge and just pumped him full of venom. I guess putting it on ice slowed it down but wonder why you couldn't get it off? Step on it pull on it or something.

T I hope this isn't one of those internet stories.

I am 100% sure this is not just one of them internet stories. Wish it was....

If you read the two stories you wonder exactly how far from his house did he stop to use the restroom, I'm thinking he was on his own road....had to be..... he wouldn't drive with a snake attached to his hand.....would he? But you have to remember that the news media is not an investigative unit.

I say this with respect due to a loss of life, but sometimes it comes down to dumb luck.

Had a buddy in high school doing dumb stupid stuff young kids do, and he was severely injured while riding his car with a bunch of other guys when they wrecked during a rain storm. Two were killed instantly, one other guy was stable enough to take by ambulance, but my friend was in pretty bad shape that they brought in a chopper. Chopper came in, picked him up, took off and accidently hit some power lines. Everyone on board was killed.

Sometimes for whatever reasons, the stars are not lined up in your favor no matter what precautions you take.

I think hand bites are much more likely to be fatal than foot bites. After all, the hands are much closer to the vital organs and it's hard to tie a tourniquet onto an arm that's throbbing with pain with one hand that's not your primary hand. Poor fellow, and sad for his family who lost their loved one and support. The fundraisers by the local people should help, but this serves as a lesson that it is never too early to carry a life insurance policy if you want to ensure your family will be cared for should tragedy strike.

I knew a Texas DPS Captain who participated in the rattlesnake roundups they have every year in Texas, and he had been bitten on the hand between the thumb and forefinger. He survived, but sure had a differnt looking scar and some missing tissue where he got bit.

This is very unfortunate. It is about 10-12 minutes from my house. It is close to Mikim's place. I know another man that has 4 acres on this very road.

This is a location that has a unique pine forest. Many attribute the forest to Indians bringing pine cone seed to the area as it is over a hundred miles from the closest east Texas piney woods.

I was just yesterday at the Houston zoo looking at some really big rattlers of all types.

I guess the thread that begs to be started is, when you should depend on the ambulance or should you just get person into car and head to hospital saving precious time. I would head out myself and call 911 enroute to alert authorities and have them meet me somewhere on the way.

Tough question, and some strong opinions.:D Of course, in the case of a snake bite, will the hospital you're headed for have an antidote?

Of course, I started on the police department when ambulance service was provided by contract funeral homes. Any first aid at the scene was done by the police officers and the ambulance attendants did nothing but load up the patient and go. It was also not too unusual for an officer to stop a traffic violator and find that driver was enroute to a hospital with a sick, injured, or pregnant person in the car. We'd simply tell that driver to follow us, and we'd lead the way with red lights and siren to the hospital. I've done that many times. But that's very much against the rules now (at least in Dallas). We now have paramedics instead of just ambulance attendants/drivers. So at the scene they first have to take the patient's temperature, pulse, blood pressure, ask questions, do paperwork, etc. to first "stabilize" the patient before transporting. We're told that saves many lives, but we're not told how many lives are lost while they waste time, and how much they add to the patients' suffering in many cases. In the event a patient is bleeding or not breathing, yes, that definitely needs to be treated at the scene, but otherwise . . . well, the "experts" say I'm wrong, so maybe I am, but I think they ought to go the hospital instead of fooling around at the scene for a half hour or so first.
