Why you should change your oil

I sure miss Builder.

Chris

What are you inferring "builder" as it seems to be an "inside joke".

Been around TBN for a long time, so what gives?

An actual sending unit on a 2001 f150?

That's the first I've heard that. No calling you a liar or anything, but I've replaced a lot of oil sending units on those generation of trucks they've all been the on/off variety.

Its been a few years, but as far as I remember, there was actually two sending units. One for the gauge and one for the ECM. The guage one had a "bulb" to it, so I thought it was a full sending unit. This was on a 4.2L V6.

I was also under the impression that it was a full sending unit, as you could removing the damping to the gauge by bypassing a set of resistors in the cluster. Of course I'm speaking from memory of info I learned 8-9 years ago, so it could be a little cloudy.

You may be correct. With a scan gauge hooked to the OBDII port you can get exact readings on almost all parameters.

i would think the psd's would have a real sender for the ECU to look at. The fuel injection on the PSD's uses oil in part of the process.. etc.

I'm all for real gauges but make them an option so my wife isn't flippin out everytime the needle isn't in the "normal" range.

Builder was another poster with very valuable information and "real world" experience as a contractor with heavy equipment and not some weekend mechanic repeating the same stories of their neighbors.
As is typical around here though, he wasn't a Ford fan so he was blasted and put down at every chance until giving up and not posting in this area anymore...

I miss his information as well along with pics of that beautiful 4x4 dump truck. Just search his username and you'll see.

I 'WANT' my wife to flip out when needle is not where it should be.

that's how you save a vehicle from overheating, or running without oil.

What I'd be in favor of are customizeable digital dashes. with flat touchscreen panel tech so easy to do ( ipads..e tc.. ) you could configure a dash with any gauge set the ecu/engine sensors could support. have analog needle gauge display.. digital segment display.. etc., numerical display.

you should even be able to configure it for some basics.. like spedo and idiot lamps .. like a simple message center... just show speed and then if a problem occurs.. have the dash flash red overtones to get your attention.

tech has been available for this for MANY years. that display and a simple DSP.. and the average cellphone has enough cpu power to run it.

heck.. a bluetooth tether to your smartphone/pad/tablet and display extra engine data that way.. etc.

You can get the "Torque" app for android. That lets watch your gauage and sensors. You can also use it for a scanner in generic OBDII. You have to buy a bluetooth adapter for the OBDII port.
