To the OP, set your tread width dependent on the attachments used. As wide as possible without diminishing productivity.

Ovrszd - I had to compromise in order to be able to load the tractor on my equipment trailer at some point in the future. I'm starting out on the middle setting for now and see how that works.

I didn't read all the replies but unless they changed the manual for the 1812 since I looked through mine, the tires will not spread far enough apart to meet BH recommendations. However, I am running the 1812 behind M5040 with R4's as it came from the factory.

Actually my 6' BH manual also says 60" inside distance between rear tires also. I wasn't even close on the MX5100 but never felt that it was a problem. I'll be pretty close on the M7060. The 12' Batwing weights 3200# and although I'll be dragging it and not lifting it, my concern is stability in turns if there's any grade.

Yes, several years back I had JD4700 which I used bush hogging very steep ground. The rear tires would not fit between the wheel wells of the trailer I had at that time (70" limitation.) Had to haul it with the tires up tight against the back of the fenders and keep something heavy up front to get proper tongue weight on the trailer. A decade later in 2011 when I had a chance, my new trailer is a deck-over allowing much wider rear tire spacing and ease of load balancing fore and aft.

Is that 60" recommendation from BH between rear tire centers or between rear tires ?

Well this is what is in the 12' Batwing OM: "make sure tractor rear tire spacing is a minimum of 60” between the inside of the tires."
I tried to find the same statement in the 6' BH again, but of course I can't. Now I'm not sure where I saw it relating to that cutter.

Interesting. I went thru my manual on the 7ft bush hog and there is no numerical reference to the host tractor at all other than horsepower. Minimum 55. Says widen spacing if operating on steeper slopes but no numbers. In my case, I run tire outer edges at 8ft apart. With 18.4 inch tires that means between tires is 96 - (2x18.4) = 59.2" Seems about right but doesn't tell us much.

Agreed. I suppose it's where you feel comfortable operating the tractor.

I hate when different manufacturers, tractor and/or impliment, have variances of a standard.

Tractor track width has historically been the distance between the centers of the tires.

Now we have manufacturers quoting distance between the inside footprint...... :(
