Wife Got a Parking Ticket in a home depot Parking Lot??

I was over at the local HD last week and there was a guy parked diagonal across 3 spaces but he was way out in the lot. The funny thing was there several cars on each side also parked on the angle. If the idea was to keep away from other cars it didn't work out too good.

This is not a good idea.
I have seen a car straddling the lines on purpose apparently for that reason. It had the side panels kicked in and it was keyed front to back. Personally, I find both behaviors inconsiderate.

Where is this world going, My wife got a parking ticket on private property, Is this posssible or just a dumb cop? Her tire was on the parking line?? We have the dumbest cops here in jacksonville, Florida

Interesting but I've gone though this thread and not seen the legal answer yet. The reality is that many private parking lots cede legal authority to local governments for the purpose of law enforcement. In fact many communities require that the property developer of larger complexes cede the legal rights of enforcement to the local authority or provide a private security to patrol the property. Many of the larger parking lots are havens for criminal activity of all types and police often spend excess time writing up petty theft, vehicle damage, break-ins, etc. The lovely Mrs_Bob was on the local plan commission when a couple of large developments came to town and the police requested, and received, concessions from the developer of a multi store mall, but did not ask for the same concessions the other which is a single store property occupied by a SUPER CENTER. It is interesting to see the crime statistics of the two large parking lots, the one that ceded authority to the police has a much lower crime rate while the Super Center has a private security and is a magnet for problems.

How soon would chaos and total anarchy arrive if we didn't have those "Dumb Cops". The thin blue line does exist and it is fragile. There are some people who should not be police officers and some that are over zealous, but to paint with such a broad brush of all police officers is wrong. Go to the deputy's shift supervisor and politely enquire about the circumstances of the citation. Maybe there was a mistake made or maybe there was a genuine violation. The police in my state have the authority to enforce Reckless driving, DUI and criminal law on private property. The only authority for parking violations are fire lanes and handicapped parking. Maybe the store has an agreement with the county about enforcement on their property. I would check it out first before condemning all law enforcement.

There's another interesting phenomenon I learned as a rookie cop over 40 years ago. Usually, people get madder about getting a parking ticket that does not go on their driving record or affect their insurance premiums than they do about a speeding ticket that costs 3 times as much to start with (the fine) and goes on their driving record and increases their insurance premiums.

Wow is this ever the truth! My wife is in charge of parking enforcement at our local PD and some of the stories she has to tell ...... you don't know whether to laugh, cry or just shake your head and walk away!
