Oh, so she really didn't retire, she just quit her job.

But I guess you could say, I retired from McDonald's at 18 to go to college.

I don't think you got much retirement money for Mickey D's. She got that and a retirement badge. She also got the option to stay in the company health insurance.

Sorry to hear that James, I guess I am lucky. I can go blow money on guns and gun parts, truck parts, as I accumulate overtime and such, sell other toys.

Steve, I was just kidding. I'm usually the one over evaulating spending while she is one telling me to go ahead and buy.

An education is good to have at any age in life, you can never have too much knowledge and it is never wasted. I commend your wife on her going back to school, something I wish I had done.

Sounds like a good thing to me! That MOUS cert will come in very handy. (Microsoft office user specialist). As for the next job, fantastic. I worked 18 years in one place and was forced to take disability retirement, which I could have never worked again at 42, but went back to school, got my networking certs and now have a great job, and back in school to learn more.

My wife has been with Verizon (GTE) for almost twenty seven years. She's sixty three years old. The other day the company came out with a buy out offer for nineteen people in her department.

We're looking at her taking it. Between the 401K and Social Security her contribution to the family coffer won't change much. AND she won't be facing all the stress of that job to boot.

This all came out of the blue, blind sided us really. We're excited, fearfull, and trying to figure out what to do next. I'm too young for Social Security and I live to work challenging projects. Her freedom means our freedom to maybe chase the work while experiencing our love for travel.

It's an exciting time.

That certainly sounds good, Harv, and I'm glad for you and Glenda. When you say you're "looking at her taking it" I guess you're both considering all the possibilities. I've known lots of folks who retired and really enjoyed it, but while it may seem odd to some, I've also known quite a few who looked forward to retirement, then fell into depression because they were bored, missed the people they had worked with, and just didn't like the change at all.

I retired at 52... one thing I was always told and it seem to be true is that you don't have nearly the expenses that you did when working.

Harv, I started with C&P telephone 27+ years ago and have seen 3 mergers and this last one (GTE) is without a doubt the craziest one yet!!! Things are changing faster now than any of the other mergers in the past at least where I am (md. I'm on the craft side ) There have been RIF's in our group on the managment side and are expecting more.( Never ever in the past.) I really don't know how things are for your wife, but with an offer for 19 people that is a BIG CHANGE!!.. If it is the double ISP plus 10k bonus at 63 it IMO would be foolish to pass up... I have three years to go and will only be 52 with 30 yrs of service and I am concerned about being able to get my 30!! Every dime is being redirected to fund FIOS!!

Just remember once the quota of 19 is filled the offer is withdrawn for everyone else, and may not be offered ever again..

If it were me they would hear a big WHOOSH"what was that" as I bolted out the door!!

Good luck with your decision...

I agree with Nasty take the money and run. I have 23 years to go if I were to retire from Vz but, if all goes well will not be there by august of next year. Our work is drying up to a trickle (special services) and from what I have heard once Fios rolls through the work goes away. In NJ we have just brought 200 Fios techs in from Long Island. They started Fios there in 05' and now have no work Fios or Pots. Heard the same about areas in Florida and Texas which would explain the Isp. Good luck and enjoy it. I may have to pay you come up to NJ to build me an iron fence and gates for the front of the house:)
