Well to make a long story short. My wife and I purchased 80 ac of land near our house almost 1 1/2 years ago. Old farm grown up. I have been cutting it down weeds, maple, and thorn trees when I have free time. My dad and I got over in the spring and plowed up three sections and planted corn. Not have been plowed in 30 or so years we just wanted to see how it would grow.
Now I also had an oil lease on it, so atv trails / lease roads are on it. I put up posted signs so campers would stay out of the old barn still standing. It need to come down, but dad and I are having a tough time with that. 100 plus year old, not many left.
So campers on the weekend come up, ride all over. Thats ok for alot of the land around here. They know my place is ok to ride on, just dont rip it up. Well this weekend some one rode in my corn.. They ride in and out the other side of the lower part of barn. Really.. Last year day before deer season one of my metal stands was stolen..
See I am over there riding around with my own utv probably 4, 5 timea a week. These people are ruining it in my eyes for themselvs. So after the drive in corn I was a little upset and crabby over it. Thats when the wife says I act like an old man..

Don't blame you for being crabby, I would go off like a shotgun. Make all those that ride your property sign in and out.
It's a priviledge to ride there, Not a right.

I'm confused. What makes it OK for the campers to ride on your property? Did you give them permission? Is the oil lease for the entire property for any purpose? And what would your wife have you do to act like something other than an old man? Ignore it? Get physical with them?

take lots of photos of the old barn
post some private property signs
get a pair of DOGS to roam the property - one of the guardian breeds

I would be thinking about ending the use of the land for all those people. It is your land now and they need to find somewhere else to ride and camp. I would be really concerned about the liability and risks you assume by letting people use the land. What happens if someone has an accident on the property and sues you for not having something properly marked or some other safety type observation? I have seen it happen too many times in Illinois where a farmer lets people access part of his non-farmed acreage, someone gets hurt and sues, and it causes a lot of grief and expense for that farmer.

Liability has to be considered for sure. We have a 4x4 park nearby that has been closed for 2-3 years while they sorted all the legals out after someone was killed. Not the fault of the owner but h**l it made it tough for him.

I can understand your frustration. You stated that campers are aware that it is okay to ride on your land. I would think that it would be difficult to allow some riders to have access to the trails and keep a watch in regards to their behavior. Are you covered by adequate insurance? I am asking this question, because it is unclear whether or not you have given permission to riders in regards to the use of the property.

We don't allow anyone to use our property for anything anymore as no one respected our property and rules of use.

We also stopped anyone, but selected hunters to use our land. We brought 113 acres in 2010 and are still cleaning up oil, beer and soda cans, but trying to repair the ATV ruts. So I posted the land every 75 feet, gave the Conservation Officers (Game Warden) permission to access for oversight and hunting, and I have cameras whose photos I scan to the Officers and to the farmer who works a portion.
Neighbors have said it is much quieter, and it is looking a lot like land should look. Best to you.

Is this land fenced ? 20 years ago returned to where I grew up and found the land was being used as a hunting area. Put up fence and sign of No hunting and they would use sign to help climb over fence.
Went to town coffee shop and explained the problem to the local coffee club .also mentioned was going hunting for 4 whl'rs and when found was going to put a 30.30 round in engine.
Also went to a group that hunted with dogs again explained not to unload at our property. took about 3 years and so far I'm able to feel safe while hunting on my property.
Gas Co. right of way of for Gas Co employees only any one else is tresspassing. Talk to the lands man for Co. ask for gate to be put up . and keep closed.
What I'm pointing out be agressive in saying No then ask who is hunting or camping on your property "Just what part of No don't they understand".
Then purchase or borrow a Large Holstein Bull that has and attitude about people around him. They would run off and elephant.
