I'm not buying their wares, but neither am I offended by the Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons. After all, they certainly pose no threat to society like the addicts. If they pick up some stray souls and take them to Church, that's better than taking them to the honky tonk or a crack house.

ANY solictor of ANY type irritates the (BLEEP) out of me. I am a 10 gallon blood donor. I wonder if the JW's would like it if I showed up ay their house of worship and began pestering them to go donate to the Red Cross?

Many people that argue the hide or run response have been told that by the police their entire life's. Criminals know that and use it. The criminal in a rural setting wanting to steal property is counting on that type of action. Standing your ground they retreat if they can. If on the other hand the purpose was to do bodily harm they would not have driven up in plain sight, even a criminal does not want a fire fight, better an ambush.
Wife did the correct thing and I salute her

And many will tell you it only makes good tactical sense to set up a defensive position.

As has been mentioned, skills, personalities, location, time of day, perceived threat level affect the "proper response" and oftentimes there may be several.

All good points. I may not have learned much in dealing with criminals all my life, but the one thing I do know, is that no matter how much you know they can always surprise you.

Retreating to the house is not because the POlice have said that for "their entire lives." It makes good TACTICAL defense and, just as importantly, LEGAL defense reasons.

TripleR beat me to the post. I had the post written but then got sidetracked for a couple of hours.:laughing::laughing:

Since none of us were actually there, and Wifey is obviously not stupid, it is hard to say she made the wrong decision. Second guessing is easy when you were not the one making the decisions in real time. It has been my experience that those who say "I would have done ..." probably have little actual experience dealing with the criminal element.

I agree...I have been in situations very similar to this...Not long ago I was sitting in my office which is in the front of our house and I saw a car turn off the road onto our driveway and speed up our driveway..it stopped and immediately a man jumped out of the drivers side door and took a couple of steps before I opened the door of my office and stepped out on the porch with my 38 tucked in my waste at the small of my back...I said in a loud voice ..what do you want and glared at him....there was another man in the passengers seat...He mumbled that he was looking for the main hwy...I told him to get in his car and get lost...he jumped back in his car and took off so fast I could not get his license no. I called the sheriff and they sent a deputy out and he guaranteed me they were up to no good..and asked if I had protection...I told him I had a 38 tucked in my waist and he was happy about that and said they would scour the area for them...

All I am saying is situations like this happen very quickly and you must quickly take in all the facts as you see them and make the move your gut tells you is the most prudent one...given the circumstances..Our garage door was open ..so had I hidden inside and waited at least 30 min . for the police...they would have taken my Jeep and loaded it with whatever else they wanted...I was at the ready and if he had made a move of aggression I would have dropped him where he stood....I am sure this lady did what she deemed the best under the circumstances she was faced with...WE were not there and you really do have to be there to feel the situation...Just my experience and opinion.

Ahhh...The Jehovah's Witnesses...

Not to hijack the thread, but.........

We have a "Kingdom Hall" a stones throw away. After we moved here, they would come all the time. We first tried the nice "we already have a church but thanks" routine. Then after coming again a bunch of times, my dad told them never to come back again. They came again and my mom told them what my dad said. They responded with "we thought that meant only that day". Yeah right. We then told them "DO NOT EVER ENTER THIS PROPERTY AGAIN - EVER". That was 9-10 years ago and we haven't seen them since............

Now, I could get into a discussion about the creepy asphalt people, but I'll save that for another thread. ;)

Several times a year, it was drilled into me "you fight the way you train". We were trained to use cover whenever possible and never expose yourself out in the open.

If I speak with someone I don't know, it is through a partially opened door with my left hand on the door and a gun in my right.

I don't "hide" in my house, I remain there as it makes the most sense to me from a tactical and legal standpoint.

I am not concerned about what will happen if someone breaks in as I know what will happen because I will be behind cover and prepared.

I am also not concerned about my wife's safety foe while she may greet you with a cookie outside, inside she will greet you with a G19 or G23 or S&W 649.

None of us are fools and will pick what works best for our situation. I am always glad to read others' opinions as I am open to learning new things.

And let's not forget the barn painters.

We have never gotten any of those. ;)

I used to get the painters and the paving guys all the time, the one with the pickup I charged with the bat had signs for a paving company on his doors. My township passed a law last year that if you have clear "No solicting" signs posted anyone entering your property with the intent of trying to sell you something is liable for trespass. Not trying to hijack the thread myself but back in 2004 I was working on a concrete slab near my deck in mid-afternoon and some moron pulled in trying to sell me meat from the back of his truck and kept giving me his sales pitch while I was troweling wet concrete. MORON !!!
