CalG -
I know the Entiat area well. It, like many other areas in NE WA is a really hot, dry place in the summer. As a note - I know for a fact that the foresters and firefighters in that part of the world are some of the best trained in the world. My family's home town is Omak. Your son works with an elite group of highly trained professionals.

Glad to hear you alright. I grew up on the East side of the state and did a number of wild fires back in the day. The wind can be a really scarey situation. The heat of the weather and fire can be a real problem when fighting fire. The smoke is hard on you too. Still have relatives in the effected areas. They are alright but fire came pretty close.

Yes sorry, we lost 177 people , family's just couldn't get out. At the time there were 400 fires burning across the state mostly caused by spotting ahead of the main fire front. And several lit by fire bugs. The Aussie bush burns very hot and the gums have oil in the leaves that turns to gasses when super heated so you get these massive fire balls. I know it's hard to leave your home, I know I didn't expect that I wouldn't want to go even though I have insurance. But you have to leave early, many in King Lake were killed on the roads, due to the fallen trees and smoke? Unfortunately they didn't get warning in time and Maryvale was blown off the map! We had an extended heat wave with temps around 115 deg and winds gusting upto 95 miles an hour. I'm glad you are all safe and feel for anyone who lost love ones and homes. No we all leave the mountains on extreme weather days during the fire season.
