Will cheap oil ruin my tractor?

The only briggs i've ever had was a 5hp tiller it broke the gear box never had any problems then there was a 2 - 5.75 hp murray push mowers one bent a crank due to a stump (operator error) the other one runs pretty good.

My neighbor has 3 lawn mowers with briggs maybe that's why he has 3 and i have 1 kohler?

Well, could be, actually I currently have a bigwheel trimmer with a Briggs engine and I also have a pressure washer with a Briggs engine. Both are doing just fine. The pressure washer I think is in it's third season and the trimmer is in it's second. I hope to get several more years from them. I think they were good value for the money. I run, of course, Mobil 1 in them /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif not that it has anything to do with their good performance so far, it is just what I have so it is what they get. J

Do you extend the changes?

I got a new TSC mower this year. It has a Briggs & Bankrupt 23 horse V twin ELS engine. I read the owners manual (I can read!!!), and it states that you should change the oil every 50 hours and the filter every 100 hours. As there is no hour meter, I changed the oil las week (1/2) season or so, and I am going to change the oil and filter before I put it up for the winter. J: Do you think that's okay? I used delvac. I notice the owners manual said that if you use synthetic oil, the change interval must still be the same!!
As usual, you opinion will be appreciated!!

I'm interested in knowing why some oems recommend a different oil than what manufacture recommends i know briggs usualy don't recommend 10w-40 but on a lawn mower manual i have it says you can use 5w-30,10w30 and 10w-40 synthetic or mineral makes no sense to me i've always heard 30w except for kohler with hydro valves

Hi Daryl, nope, I do not extend the oil change intervals. I change them on a seasonl basis since they do not get run as regular as say the tractor. I think the 50 hours with a new filter is fine for your Briggs. I would go ahead and in the future change the filter at every change. Just cheap insurance. Actually, next time, cut the filter open and take a look, if it still looks clean and you want to save money it will give you assurance in the future you can skip filters at every other change. Pull the pleats apart and look down in them and then decide for yourself. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif J

When I cut the filter open, should I cut it down the side or cut the bottom off or cut the top off and what do you cut it with? I'd use my Metabo, but it would probably be a smokey mess. I must assuredly know my gas axe is out too!!

The filter media is glued to the mounting end. Cut it around just off the flange and the cupped end slides off. Summit sells a tool just for this purpose.
