a plane is standing on a movable runway( something like a conveyor).as the plane moves the conveyor moves but in the opposite direction.the conveyor has a system that tracks the speed of the plane and matches it exactly in the opposite direction.QUOTE]
Perhaps some readers will be helped by the following: take the sentence literally. If the plane is moving 180mph, say, then the treadmill is moving 180mph in the opposite direction ...so what? If the plane is moving through the air at 180mph it will generate sufficient lift to "take off"
...now the more interesting question: if you take the sentence literally, and the plane climbs to cruise altitude and flies at cruise speed, say, 500mph, will the conveyor be moving in the opposite direction at 500mph? and, if the aircraft does a 180 (makes a U-ey) does the conveyor screech to a halt and reverse itself at 500mph ? And, if the airplane lands on the other coast and comes to rest at the gate, can the conveyor belt finally relax for a while?
