I want to install a hydraulic cylinder on a dump wagon.

I have 4"x6'x1-3/8" cylinder on an old Hesston hay stacker. I noticed the rods in my 2-1/2" cylinders on one of my tractor fel are larger than 1-3/8 and are shorter cylinders.

I presume on the stacker operation, the most load would be in the closing position, so no chance of bending rod. If I use on the dump wagon, it will be pushing open. Is there any chance of the rod not being strong enough & bending?

if nothing binds, the cylinder won't bend.

and it will push a lot harder then it will pull, if that makes sense.

I understand, it will push harder than pull. It's just in its orginal application, probably the most applied load was in the pull application and the application I now want to use it in, the load will be greater in the push position.

I just became a little concerned when I saw smaller cylinders with larger rods. I guess this might just be to get quicker cylinder movement in the pull direction.

Guess it all depends if the dump trailer is full of feathers or wet manure and how large the trailer box is.Just kidding but their is some truth to it,I mean look under a single axle dump truck most likely hauling no more than 8 to 10 ton, cylinders are 8" round 2 1/2 shaft but around 3' to 4' long.Guess it would also depend on your hinge location and lifting point too.Six foot long cylinder at the shaft size you said seems like it might get a little weak if fully extended depending on the weight.

Well Neal, it's hard to say. If you know weight and then calculate percentage on fulcrum and on rod at varying stroke lengths.... uh, I think it sounds kinda skinny.
It's a shame to tear apart a real haying machine anyway. I don't know why they're not more common.
