I have a 1.5 mile long driveway and several other driveways and they are all dirt. i also have a meteor pull type snowblower attached to l2800, with a heated cab. I break a few shear pins but after the 3rd snowfall the rocks seem to disappear. I do not use skid shoes.

I've hit newspapers and phone books with my blower, all it's ever done is make mess with all that ripped up paper.

My blower works fine on my 600 foot gravel driveway. My shoes are set as low as they can go, unlike everyone else's recommendation here. The first time I snow blow, I drive my SUV up and down the driveway to pack the snow in and then keep the blower about an inch off the ground the first time. Usually by the second time, the ground is frozen, the imperfections are filed in and I have the blower on the ground. Blowers do very well on gravel, if you know what you are doing, prep the driveway correctly and you have the right conditions (frozen ground).

You can see by this picture that there is only the thinnest layer of snow on the ground. We have abour 4 months straight where the ground is frozen solid under the driveway. Once the melt begins in April, my driveway begins to open up almost immediately.

I chose my blower because it had the biggest skid shoes I could find. Even then, I find it works better (less rock) if I hold the blower off the ground early in the season. Once I build up a layer of hard packed snow I drop the blower down on the shoes.
During a thaw I might also hold the blower off the ground if required to keep from breaking up my base.

That is exactly what I have done and it works flawless every time I use it

I missed seeing a newspaper (light falling snow had covered it) and I picked it up in the blower. It wedged in the fan and what a job I had trying to get it out! It was so tight I couldn't get force the fan backwards or forwards so had to try to rip it apart and beat it to pieces with a ripping bar I carried to help remove snow from a plugged chute. I have great respect for newspapers now and pay special attention to any driveways where I think there might be a paper.

I used a propane torch to burn the paper, just watch out you don't get close to bearings or seals and you are on your way in minuites

I was a mile or more from home and don't normally carry a propane torch with me.

Yup, but that is one of those situations where you have ton wonder if in the time and frustration it took you to beat it out, you probably could have driven home, used a torch and been back :) I love that hindsight is 20/20 :)
