Wondering if this is worth the trouble? I am guessing they weigh 80 each.

Better than nothing. I have different ballast wt for different jobs I am doing. Either way those suitcase wts are great to have around

Plus having it further back behind the wheels adds leverage increasing the effectiveness.

When Lifting heavy loads the rear gets light, Heck you can tell a diffrence just by connecting the pallet fork. The loader has plenty of umph, and I would like to be able to use it safely. I am contantaly getting stuck on soft ground just carrying a load, not doing anything special. The loader is repordedly rated at 3000lbs, I would be happy If I could pick up 1000 and move it around.

You can put a 1000 pounds of cement in a 55 gallon drum and I bet you could pick up 2000 pounds with you loader. add wheel wts and do even more

The standard rule fo thumb that Ford uses when calculating 3 pt hitch weight vrs wheel weight is that each pound of 3 pt hitch weight is equal to 1.5 pounds of wheel weight.

Here is a picture of my 1,300 pound ballast. It plants the rear down hard. The tractor feels much safer with it installed. 500 pounds didn't get the job done as well.
