Winch on a tractor?

   / Winch on a tractor? #11
I used to bury my 8N up to the axles in mud so often that I started carrying a 2 ton come-along and a couple of chains on it. I was always in the woods so it was no problem to find something to hook on to.

The big advantage with the 8N was I could put it into first gear and let it idle with the tires spinning while pulling with the come-along, once it got traction I would get back on it and stop it so I could unhook the chains. Crude, but worked every time.

I used a come-along to pull my Kubota B7100 off a fence corner post that I got lodged against. Hooked it to the drawbar and put enough pressure on it to help the tractor to go a little sideways when I moved (tractor was on a slope and wanted to keep sliding into the post).

I am pleased to announce that I have graduated to a 4 ton come-along these days and haven't had to use it yet but it is in the tractor stall if I need it.

Biggest problem with an electric winch on a tractor is the amperage draw. I have an 8,000 # winch on my Jeep and it will drag a battery down fast if you are pulling real hard. Hydraulic winch would be better on a tractor but hydraulic winches are higher than electric winches (I think but have not checked prices).
