Has anyone mounted a 12V winch on the front of their BX22? I was thinking about using one of the Superwinch ATV models. I move a lot of small logs I cut for firewood in some pretty wet areas and I thought a winch might come in handy.

I've thought about this myself. All I need is a good excuse. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

One thought though... you might want to look at the current draw of the winch, if it's more that 15 amps it'll overload the dynamo unless you have the alternator upgrade installed.

Hey guys,
If you are using cable to pull logs and or other stuff, make sure that you are out of harms way. Cables that snap can do very serious damage to you and the machine. Most twitch gear have cages for the operators protection.

You might want to chain a block/pulley around a tree and then use the tractor to pull the cable that would be connected to the log you wanted to move. It wouldn't require any additional electric modification and might be safer. Just a thought....good luck and stay safe.

I have toyed with the idea of making up a mount for a winch I have sitting in the garage. It's a Warn 8000# that I haven't used for a while, so it would be a case of overkill on a CUT. Just can't bring myself to do it.

In most cases you don't need to be too concerned about the amp draw. I used this winch a fair amount for about 20 years, and only once had a problem with the current. The last vehicle I had it on was a Silverado, and it was mounted on a frame in the bed. At a jobsite, I made a number of hard pulls to remove temporary electrical cable. To keep the 3/4 ton Chevy from sliding, I chained one of the front towhooks to a full 30 CY dumpster. When one of the pulls SHOULD have been getting real easy, the winch stalled. It was only then I noticed the truck engine had shut off. The winch had sucked so much power out of the battery that it didn't have enough left to run the engine.

I pulled things so heavy that the truck would slide on blacktop with me standing on the brakes, but the alternator was able to recharge the battery between pulls except that one time when I simply overdid it.

This winch has a DC series motor, and produces the most torque just prior to stall. At that point, the current draw is 450 amps.

I would occasionally get the question "howcum ya got the winch in the back?" and would reply with an answer borrowed from a magazine years ago - "once I need to use it, it's likely because I already went too far forward".................chim

It should not overload the dynamo if it is used only intermittently. The battery is there to provide current also. As long as the total duty cycle is not exceeded and the battery is healthy it should be OK. J

Thanks for the replies.. I've got the High output alternator kit on my tractor so I'm not worried about the current draw from the winch.

I've been around winches and cables on my dads farm and in my misspent youthfull days of 4WD offroad fun. Half a dozen trucks in a river, buried in the muck, water up to the seats...but that's a story for another day..

I'm well aware of the safty issues involved. I've seen the end of a snapped frayed cable and would not wish to be on the business end of one. Sandyc is correct, give cables the proper respect or they may seriously injure/kill you.

I think I'll take a look at one of the ATV winches and see what it would take to make it work.
