thanks for the many suggestions, I will see if one of the harbor freight type stores here in Canada have already made plates (we don't have harbor freight stores) Maybe amazon has, it would be a lot easier than trying to cut stock metal and weld fabricate one up myself.

Buy a drop hitch in whatever amount you like. Turn it upside down and weld a plate to the hitch where the pin hole is. Drill four holes in the plate and bolt on the winch.

I have a 3K Warn on my Rhino and can stall it. I wouldn't suggest anything smaller than 4K for the RTV.

Also research the specs of any winch you consider buying. There's a few things to consider.

All winches are rated max pull with only one wrap on the spool. Most times you will doing short pulls with 3 or 4 wraps on the spool.

All winches are rated at specific line speed. Very important if using the winch for self recovery. Think about how slow a winch is that's rated at 6ft per minute for example.....

All winches are spec'd in regards to their amp draw. This is critical in respect to your battery and charging system.

Generally speaking you get what you pay for. A cheap winch will be lacking in one or more of the above mentioned areas.

Then there's "duty cycle", cheapo winches have a very low duty cycle, so on a long pull you could be waiting around for a while, before you are done with the pull.

Thanks for the addition Rob. I forgot that one!!!

The RTV900 I have didn't come with a front receiver on the front, so I went to my local steel supplier and purchased a generous length of the tubing. Cut off a piece, welded it to a plate, and bolted the plate to the front of the RTV. I had an old Warn 8000 lb. winch laying around, so when a cheapo Harbor Freight mount plate came up on sale, I snagged it. It's a little bit flimsy, but so far, so good. I made up 25' leads with 00 welding cable and connectors, and use the winch on the car trailer, the back and front of my F250, and on another receiver welded to the box blade on the tractor. Each vehicle got short connectors on the positive terminal of the battery; the negative lead just uses a welding type ground clamp hooked to the frame. Very versatile, easy to use, and almost has me looking forward to getting stuck again...:laughing:

instead of a physically mounted winch on front/rear. might suggest, a cheaper unit, that has a hook at the motor, and then hook on end of cable. and a few feet of extra cable to connect to battery. and then making sure you have tow hooks or like on front/rear of unit.

my issue when needing to get unstuck with tractors and vehicles. is there is not a tree in sight. and if there is. the cable length is no were even long enough on the winch to even get me to a given point of connection.

on other hand, i might be able to get another vehicle in some place to pull me out. or use as an object to connect to.

i am not a hunter. but i could easily see ya taking down a dear or what not you have in some woods. and having to pull it up out of a creak, or through some thickets and around some down trees and larger limbs and needing a way to pull the animal back and forth were you might not be able to get into with atv/utv. being able to have say 20 feet of electrical cable. and then being able to toss a strap around a tree, toss on winch, and then run cable to animal. might be wanted.

if you are gutting out an animal. perhaps toss cable across a tree branch and winch it up.

for me, the portable winch be used on trailer as well. having winch directly in center on front to pull a vehicle up onto trail all nice and said. but i am pulling up logs and other things on trailer. and having a powered winch that i could use instead of ratchet straps and like would be nice. so i could have better angle of attack.

i only use cable / chain to pull something up out to a section. to were i can physically shorten everything up and then connect to with only a few inches of chain between pulling unit and what ever i am dragging / pulling out. i do not try to pull something with say 10 feet or more cable chain while driving forward to were ever.

i do have lake's / creaks. and pulling a boat up out of the water. hill side tend to be nasty on wet days. so no vehicle or tractor (tearing up hill side) is allowed. portable winch and a few feet of electrical cable so i could move winch from unit between tree and boat would work.

============
pay for some quick connects for the electrical cables towards the battery. jacking around with a battery, even alligator clamps. *forget it* it would be so much a hassle i would not even bother with it or less it is last ditch effort and just obtained the winch and yet to hook it up correctly.

that is an interesting "out of the box" idea Boggen........I will consider that, thanks

I've seen guys do that before, the idea was so they could use it on different vehicles...

Kinda sucks having to use up bed space to haul it around though...

i hear ya. but equipping every tractor and vehicle and implement with a receiver hitch. can be costly if you do not know how to weld. and 3/4 of the time of to many times to count being stuck i would need power on the other vehicle/tractor, due to stuck vehicle already having problems of its own (most likely some sort of break down)

to many times i would have loved to have a portable winch. i do not need a super heavy 100lbs plus beast of a winch. but something i can man handle, when i am already dead tired, stressed out, slipping and sliding in mud/snow already, and most likely having my own sweat shower going on, or nearing point of frost bite.

==========
for trailer 30 gallon sprayer i have. i rigged up regular 110v female and male connections. so i could use a generic 110v extension cord. between pump and battery connectors.

have used the sprayer on 6v tractor, and running sprayer off of a 12v deep cycle marine battery, to pulling it behind a blazer/suv, to a truck, to a riding lawn mower. and just tossing what ever extension cable i had nearby. between pump electrical connection. and running extension cord through windows and like all the way up to the front of pulling unit. and then swap alligator clips, to quick connects that might already have on vehicles battery.

other words most of them battery minders/chargers. end up having a little connector on the end, so you can swap different ends for the battery minder to connect to a battery. same idea. i just went 110v male/female connectors so i could use a regular 110v extension cord. and not have to worry about having a specific cable.

i am embarrassed to admit it. but the extension cord doing has worked, when needed as needed.
