Not really a good sub-forum to ask this but better that any other I could figure.
My Windows 11 computer/laptop did an update early Friday morning. Weird stuff started to happen and I finally figured out it was moving all my data files to the OneDrive cloud. Not copying them but moving them and deleting them off the computer, My antivirus says that my computer is clean, I have been fighting with OneDrive for months as it defaults and wants me to save things there instead of my hard drive and I refuse but the s/w does not make easy. I keep them on my HD and back that up. Now without even knowing that it was doing this migration this started. It acts very myuch like a trojan horse. I guess M/S is a trojan horse.

Anyone else had this happen?
Anyone know how to stop and permanently prevent it other than disconnecting from the internet as this started without any action on my part?
Any idea how to get then back on the HD other than copying them and all folders manually?

I used to like windows and office but not anymore

Copy the files from One Drive back to your HD, maybe even make another copy on an external HD, different partion on your HD or another folder, then you need to go into the Apps section in the Settings menu and delete the One Drive application.
Another reason I refuse to upgrade from Win7.

Avoid logging in to MS if possible. It'll ask you to sign in every boot, but you can skip.

I had to upgrade as some programs/application just would run anymore. In addition it was a new laptop. I am pretty sure my backup hard-drive has all the files but it screwed up Outlook as well.

I have never used OneDrive for anything. That is why I find this such a violation of my privacy.

I believe if you have a Microsoft account, you've got OneDrive (I avoid MS stuff like the plague so there's some assumptions in there). See if you can log out of your MS account (Outlook and anything else as well) so that the computer can't access OneDrive.

Checking online (searched "disable computer automatically copying files to onedrive"):
  • Click OneDrive icon in the system tray, then click cog wheel to go to onedrive settings
  • Click advanced settings
  • Under "Files on-demand", click (ie turn on) "Download all files" (equivalent to "always keep on this device" believe it or not)
It should pull your files back from onedrive to your computer and stop pushing them.

I've gone through the process one time to decouple a Windows 11 machine from OneDrive. I was successful, but it wasn't straight-forward, and I went through some trial and error.

This is probably a good starting point.

Good luck.

Setup Windows to sign in as a Local Account and not Microsoft and then disable One Drive.

As a side note, have Windows 10 (my IT guys says don’t upgrade to 11) but use OneDrive.

Love the cloud access from any device. Just my $.02

That would be an immediate 'remove One Drive" moment for me.
Somewhat same thing Adobe's doing, unless you agree to their EULA which gives them the right to access your files using AI for " product Improvement" you can't open your files.
. Not to mention having to pay $300 a year for the privledge of using their crap.
