But a directory is a file in Unix.
Linux has made it easier for the non-computer guy to use Unix

On another note - my wife does merchanising for Microsoft and is preparing a bunch of stores for the XP release this Thursday. At Staples, MS and Staples have prepared a handy, dandy CD (Free mind you) which walks you through XP features. Very well prepared. Additionally, they've included a utitlity which scans your system and informs you of what you would need to upgrade, replace, or trash. It will be found close to the area where you reserve your release. Just ask.

So for those of you who wish more information, go grab one.

Terry

Thanks for all the responses, guys. You've really cleared this issue up.

Ahem ... actually you have, in a way. What I note in the collective responses is a clear sense of lack of direction or, perhaps, even confusion. I also sense an underlying tenor of dissatisfaction with various Windows things, either in some specific sense or in a general sense.

I have spent most of my free time over the last week trying to educate myself on the current computer scene by surfing various computer sites and forums. One thing seems clear about Windows: XP is the strategic direction and all new systems shipped after today will only have XP.

On CNET, based on thousands of user ratings, XP gets 48% thumbs up from users and 52% thumbs down. One of the operating systems gets 93% thumbs up. Anyone want to guess, without looking, which one it is?

What was the margin of error in that scientfic poll? Did they prevent ballot stuffing? Show me the survey.

Any MS OS user knows that Mac users are zealots -- and we MS users love to bash MS but we still buy MS.

What did the CNet reviewers think of the various OS's? Then think about availability of service/software and the price of same. MS is still the best game in town. And if you'd like to hear me bash them I could go on for hours.

CNET asks users of the product to click on Thumbs Up or Thumbs down. It then posts all the written evaluations of users who care to explain their votes.

Windows ME got 28% thumbs up. 2000 got 89% thumbs up. I dont know why any group of users would be more "zealous" than another, if what you mean is that they would lie when they vote thumbs up.

What is Red Hat, anyway?

BTW, I just checked that CNET "poll" -- on XP Home edition 53% thumbs up vrs 47% thumbs down -- 93 "votes" cast. XP Professional -- 63% thumbs up/37% down with 87 votes cast. Mac OS X 10.1 -- 93% thumbs up/7% thumbs down -- 1339 votes -- hmmm. Me thinks they doth attest too much.

I don't think they would lie -- I think they are happy with their choice -- and they are vocal in their happiness. Zeal. No doubt the Mac is a great choice for many users -- but MS is mainstream. I would not make my choice based on the thumbs up/thumbs down CNET user vote. But that is me.

Epinions is another site that follows a format similar to CNET. They ask users to click on Recommended or Not Recommended and then post their evaluations. Here are the Recommended percentages for some operating systems:

Window XP -- not reviewed yet
Windows 98 -- 55%
Windows ME -- 58%
Windows 98 (2d) -- 71%
Be OS -- 80%
Mac OS 9 -- 86%
Red Hat Linux -- 88%
SuSe Linux -- 89%
Windows 2000 -- 90%
Mac OS X (public beta) -- 92%
Mandrake Linux -- 93%
Sun Solaris -- 93%
Debar GNU -- 100%
Silicon Graphics IRIX -- 100%
Slackware Linux -- 100%

Is everyone a "zealot" except pre-2000 Windows users?

Zeal has nothing to do with percentages -- rather it has to do with the likelihood of being moved enough to respond at all. My remark about Mac zealots was a friendly Mac user/windows user jab. Don't get too bent out of shape by it.

Good luck with your new computer/os -- whatever your final choice is.
