Wins 1 million dollars and collects food stamps

I am a retiree of the state department (DHS) here in Michigan that administers public assistance, and have been very vocal about the story in the local online newspaper. Although I never was a caseworker, my sister in law is, and I knew hundreds of other caseworkers during my long career.

Last spring, (2011) another public assistance client won lottery money and the Legislature here began the process of introducing bills that would require the state lottery to notify the Department of Human Services about lottery winners. According to the article printed in yesterday's newspaper, two bills have been passed but QUOTE:

"The work isn't finished yet..." !!!! Lawmakers all agree the bills should have been passed and made into law by now. The really ironic thing is, one lawmaker is quoted on the front page of the local news as saying, QUOTE:

"They (welfare recipients) want something for nothing......"

And I posted on the website of the local news, QUOTE:

"The worthless, pandering lawmakers have had a year to establish new laws that would require the lottery to inform DHS of winners that were collecting public assistance. Looks to me like the LAWMAKERS are the ones who want something for nothing...."

Whenever they want legislation to give themselves a pay raise or enhance their retirement benefits, it gets passed right away. The rest of the time, they have such a poor work ethic nothing ever gets done in a timely manner.

Don't blame the caseworkers of DHS, blame the worthless Legislature we have here.

Very well said, the sorry people want something for nothing and are getting it. People who I don't know or do, are getting the benifits we have paid into for so many years when they have not paid the price or paid in for any of their benifits. People who get a big tax refund, free hosp. dental for the kids as long as they do not declaire they actually live with their spouse while the rest of us ....well, don't get me started...Then I hear about how much SS I will get and what at age. What age?(now this is changed) I well paid into this, and at what age I will get my money back if you figure the the simple interest. Looks like the rules have changed, and polititians have changed them, the people like me who paid into them, and the simple returns we are receiving. Most of the older people are only working for insurance they have already paid into from yesteryears already. I am too. Think of the interest on that.

What still gets me is the fact that IF she was SOOO poor that she needed the hand-out, what the h3ll is she doing buying lottery tickets?

If you art on public assistance or welfare of anykind, IMO, you should ONLY be buying the necessities. Not a carton of smokes a week, lottery tickets, beer, etc.

I like beer, but I dont like buying it for everyone:confused2:

IMO, I think that if anyone who is getting a handout gets caught buying these types of things, their handout should be stopped, or at least cut back.

But until then, I guess I'll keep working hard to support all these "poor" folk, whom BTW, I dont think most of them even have a clue what really being poor is.

Do remember that food stamps are a project of the Dept. of Agriculture to benefit farmers. Usually very big corporate farmers.

So you think we should have higher taxes on the wealthier (the ones who took risks, had an idea, and worked hard to fulfill their dream), AND....

More hand outs to lower income?????

THATS socalism. And certainly NOT where I want the country to go.

Dont get me wrong, I dont know ALL of the circumstances EVERY time AND I am ALL for helping those who CANT help themselves.

What I am against is helping those who WONT help themselves. I know there are many that need AND deserve the handout. But I think we ALL know that there are FAR too many that dont.
LD1 well said as i see this getting political i will move on.

I think she shouldnt get any of the million. TAXED @ 100%, since it really wasnt "her" money that bought the ticket anyway.
