Oil & Fuel Winter Diesel Motor Oil?

Bob, I switched to 10W-30 years ago because that's what NH ships in their tractors and because when I used 15W-30, it would be many seconds before the oil warning light would go off on my old Ford 1720. When the oil companies changed formulas a few years ago to meet the tighter automotive standards and the oil no longer became suitable for diesels, I went to synthetic and synthetic blends. My pole barn is unheated. On newer Ford and NH tractors there is a foot-long tube that transports the oil from the lower block area up to the head. That's were the sensor is and I just didn't think it was good to run for long without adequate pressure up there. I've even run on 5W-30 sythetic or blend for the same reason. My manual says both are OK and I appreciate that they get flowing quickly.

The Deere dealers I've spoken to all seem to recommend the 15W-40 I've got. They just say that's what Deere says to use.

Hmm.

I suppose this all becomes moot if you have an engine and hydraulic heater installed, right?

I've used Amsoil 15w-40 synthetic since my first 50hr change. If I remember right, synthetic oil flows better at the colder temps, even at the same weights. Do be sure to use diesel rated oil though.

If you park your tractor in a heated garage the 15W-40 is fine. If it is not heated or you it leave outside and the temps get below 32 degrees, I would recommend the John Deere 0W-40 Plus 50 semi-synthetic oil. If you have other diesel equipment it would pay to buy the 55 gallon drum........MUCHO cheaper that way. I use the John Deere 15W-40 Plus 50. It came to about $1.29 a quart buying the 55 gallon drum. I believe it was $285.00. I use this oil in my JD 4410, Dodge Cummins, Boat engine, and Nissan. Make sure you use ONLY Fleet Gard or John Deere filters! Fleet Gard makes filters for JD.

I didn't know Fleetguard made filters for JD!

I bought an extra JD filter so I'll use that first.... but i use Fleetguard Microglass in my cummins already, would be nice to get them from one place. I get my Cummins filters at Genogarage.com

Is there a place online you can get Fleet JD filters?

John, the Dodge Cummins goes through about 3 gallons each change. I just changed the oil in my new Cummins - 11 quarts. So with multiple pieces of equipment, 55 gallons would only last for about 2-3 years.

Shell makes a synthetic Rotella oil that is 5W-30 (I think). Wal-Mart sells it for $12.83/gallon. I'm going to use it in my Dodge Cummins, next time I change the oil.
