Winter Gloves/Mittens?

Roy boy, you have many great suggestions to choose from. The electric snowmobile gloves/mitts would be my choice, one size larger than needed if you want to also use a glove.
There are simple things to do to improve your circulation. Niacin, a member of the vitamin B family will cause your blood vessels to open and increase circulation. However there is a price, niacin causes flushing and tingling until you get accustomed to it. Start slowly with a daily low dose and build from there, best taken with meals. There is a NO-flush form of Niacin but I cannot say if it is effective for circulation.
Like everything else, use your head and don not over do.

There are both electric socks, battery powered and insoles, snomobile powered by plug in. Check out shade tree powersports or dennis kirk I have seen them advertised there. It would be ez enough to tye into the 12 volt system in on the tractor, just have to remember to unplug yourself:laughing:

I'd go with some sort of gloves, I wouldn't want to be using a tractor in mittens...IMO

Third.... I would find some warm gloves or mittens suitable for this kind of work that would actually keep my hands and fingers warm! This I have not done! My circulation is horrible and my fingers become amazingly painful when cold. But... what to buy?

Can you folks make any recommendations about gloves or mittens (mittens tend to work better for me because my fingers don't seem capable of generating their own warmth when alone in a glove finger each by themselves). I would prefer gloves, it I could find some very warm ones but am willing to use mittens when mainly steering and shifting.
What is a good solution to this problem that won't break the bank?

I have a number of pairs of gloves that are insulated that I use depending on the temperature and what kind of work I am doing. The best, by far, for the coldest temperatures is a pair of ski gloves I bought in Aspen, CO. Can't remember the brand name. They were a little over $100 (on sale) but have removable liners and I have worn them in the coldest temps (down to 0 deg F) and my hands were toasty warm. Above freezing temps, they actually can be too warm.

I would suggest getting several pair for different conditions. I.e. working on a oily hydraulic line on my tractor in the winter and I'm NOT wearing those pricey ski gloves. LOL.

Sitting on an open station tractor is much different than Skiing. In fact there will be a very big different between Downhill clothing and Cross-country clothing.

I beg to differ, sitting on a chair-lift in -20 temperature with the wind-blowing 20-50 mph. If something can keep you hands warm in that scenario or while under similar conditions snowmobiling It'll work just fine for sitting on a tractor as well.

My point exactly. Performance gear helps with wicking the moisture away from your body, and also is warm without the bulk of other stuff. Skiers spend hours out in some really cold temps sometimes moving, but alot of time is spent on a lift exposed to the elements while not moving. The warmest gloves in the world are a small part in staying warm. As your body cools, blood stops flowing to your extremeties to keep vital organs functioning. Staying warm means limiting exposed skin, and keeping your core temp up. For warm hands, heat packs are guaranteed to work. Keeping the rest of you warm is just as important and helps the extremeties. Stay warm

Regarding the original post the guy was looking for a decent set of mitt/gloves to keeps his hands warm. In my experience he won't find a hand covering more effective for the intended application than a good set of snowmobile mitts.

Somebody was asking about warm boots, from my experience the warmest boots that I've owned were Baffin Boots, they're water proof and toasty warm, I use them for winter four wheelin, snow blowin, ice fishing and they work great. I have the James Bay model, but there are many to choose from.

When sitting on the tractor one doesn't have to take into account the clothing necessary to dissipate sweat accumulated on the Mogul Runs. The body does not generate as much heat either.

Yes, I have been out Sking a time or two at temperatures far below -20. Fahrenheit

If you can keep DRY while sweating then your problems are half over. My big baffin boots are great for sitting on a sled or ATV while ice fishing, just don't ask me to walk anywhere or operate foot pedals.
I find that a couple of pairs of thinsulate gloves work best for me,(swap them when they get damp) until I put a hole in them.
The steering whell isn't too bad, but I wish I had a heated joystick....

When I went dogsledding in Ely, MN, in Jan the outfitter set me up with some warm gloves and some super mittens. The mittens have a strap just like little kids' have--run it up your sleeve, over your back, and down the other sleeve of your coat. They go most of the way up my arm. The strap is what makes them killer: when I need dexterity, I just pop them off and they dangle out of the way while I work with my gloves on. Then, I can slip my hands back in them for driving the tractor. They worked dogsledding and they worked plowing snow in our Post-Zombie-Apocalyptic Winter of 2008-2009.

Good thread. I normally just tough it out and suffer but I think this year I'm going to splurge and get some decent winter protection for myself. The Curtis Cab will have to wait until I pay some other bills down. In the mean time good gloves and boots will work.

Choose ONLY the choppers with the wool liners...there are fakes out there without the separate wool liner

For boots I use Sorrels from Canada with the wool liners, never got close to cold with them!

Nope...the liners keep you warm quite a while after the leather gets wet.

Also, the leather will dry out and be good to use.
